OPINION & COMMENT

Pesach in a Jewish Home — Holy Activity in a Holy Environment

A Jewish family is not just a convenient social structure that can be altered or discarded. Rather it is an essential part of life itself as envisioned by the Torah. Nothing makes this more clear than the yom tov of Pesach.

HaRav Yitzchok Hutner's Mesibos Chasal — Bidding Yom Tov Farewell
Excerpts from Reshimos Lev, written by Reb Leibel Rutta

Reb Leibel wrote us that the Mesibos Chasal always took place in the dark — lights out, lasting some two hours after Yom Tov. Following each piece, niggunim of deveikus or of Shiras HaYam were sung. "These gatherings were lessons in holding on to the Yom Tov as one returned to normal life that have not left me to this day."

Telolei Oros: Parents and Children, Day and Night — A Selection of Thoughts for the Seder Table

Each Son Has Potential

In the Torah, the questions and answers of the four sons do not appear in the same order as they do in the Haggodoh. In response to the question of the rosho (Shemos 12:26), the posuk gives an answer that is suited to the chochom. The she'eino yodei'a lish'ol receives the answer that is given in the Haggodoh to the rosho, (Shemos 13:8), while the question of the chochom, (Devorim 6:20) gets an answer that is suited for the tam.

OBSERVATIONS

Observations: China May Soon Surpass the USA
by Mordecai Plaut

The United States has been a world power for almost a century, was one of two superpowers for over 40 years after World War II, and for the past 15 years or so has been alone in its class. However this looks likely to change before long, as China is growing by leaps and bounds and is beginning to flex its muscles.

First Day at School
by Esther Leah Avner

I always wanted to be a teacher.

I actually began teaching even before attending school. When I was three years old, my elder brother informed me that his teacher used a cane to chastise her students. That was in Belfast, Ireland, over sixty years ago. How it is today, I do not know.

Additional Luach Information

On Tuesday night, the eve of 14 Nissan (Apr. 11) is the search for chometz - bedikas chometz, and the chometz is burnt the next morning, Erev Pesach, Wednesday, 14 Nissan (Apr. 12) until the end of the zman sreifas chometz. On erev Pesach the firstborn fast— Ta'anis Bechoros.

Yov Tov Pesach falls on Thursday, 15 Nissan (Apr. 14), in Eretz Yisroel, and on Thursday and Friday (Apr. 14-15) in Chutz Le'aretz. The days until Shevi'i Shel Pesach are Chol HaMo'ed.

From Mussaf of Yom Tov Pesach in Eretz Yisroel we say morid hatal in Shemoneh Esreih instead of vesen tal u-motor livrocho.

From Thursday night, Motzei Yom Tov Rishon Shel Pesach, we count sefiras ha'omer until Shavuos.

The seforim hakedoshim write to make a meal on the sixteenth of Nissan to remember the se'udas Esther that she made when Homon was hanged (Mishnah Berurah, 490:2 from the Mogen Avrohom).

Shevi'i Shel Pesach falls on Wednesday, 21 Nissan (April 19) and in Chutz Le'aretz also on Thursday, 22 Nissan (April 20) which is Yom Tov Sheini Shel Goliyos - Shmini Shel Pesach.

Many are accustomed to read Pirkei Ovos after Minchah of Shabbos, from Pesach until Rosh HaShanah.

Our minhag is not to pray Yom Kippur Koton and surely not to fast during the month of Nissan.
