Jerusalem Municipality Completing Construction of Matnas
Community Center in Ramat Shlomo
by Betzalel Kahn
The first chareidi community center of its kind, which will
operate under the close supervision of neighborhood rabbonim,
is nearing completion in Jerusalem's Ramat Shlomo
neighborhood.
Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky worked to allocate the land on
which the large matnas is being built and even
obtained millions of shekels in funding from the Housing
Ministry and other sources. The construction of the high-
quality, 4,000- square-meter (40,000 sq. ft.) facility was
planned to meet the needs of chareidi users, such as having
separate entrances for men and women in many areas.
Scheduled to open in the coming weeks, the community center
will include a large events hall, a large fitness center, a
computerized library run by the Municipal Department of Torah
Culture and more. Various events, programs, activities and
lectures will be held throughout the year for the chareidi
public from around the city.
Rabbi Ezra Berger, director of the Community Administration
in Ramat Shlomo, said the new facility allows programs to
encourage health and fitness to be held under rabbinical
supervision "with a clear distinction from matters associated
with sports culture," saying only equipment that promotes
good health will be available, such as exercise bikes and
treadmills.
