by Yated Ne'eman Staff
United Torah Judaism and Shabbat — Agudas Yisroel-Degel
HaTorah held its first meeting after the elections for the
17th Knesset. Participants included MKs Rabbi Yaakov Litzman,
Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz, Rabbi Meir Porush, Rabbi Moshe Gafni,
Rabbi Shmuel Halpert, Rabbi Yaakov Cohen, Jerusalem Deputy
Mayor Rabbi Uri Maklev, who was seventh candidate on the UTJ
list, Party Manager Rabbi Amitai Shulman and Rabbi Moshe
Schiffman.
The meeting opened with an announcement of President Moshe
Katzav's invitation to consult with party members on the
question of who to charge with the task of setting up the
government.
After discussing the matter the party members drafted a reply
reading, "Following your letter in the matter of our
invitation to confer regarding who to place the task of
setting up the government on and in light of our need to
consult with the rabbonim on the issue regarding which we
have been invited to consult with the President we hereby ask
to be invited for consultation only toward the end of next
week." President Katzav later sent a message agreeing to the
request and asked to schedule the meeting at a time that
would be more convenient for UTJ.
Afterwards the party members heard reports on the election
results based on a geographical breakdown. At the end of the
meeting a discussion was held on several issues currently on
the agenda.
