Opinion and Comment: The Perils of Sherut Leumi
One of the most bitter battles waged by Torah Jewry was
against the Sherut Leumi ("National Service") law
passed in the early days of the State. After the
government agreed to exempt girls who declared their
observance of mitzvos from service in the army, there
was an attempt to enact a compulsory Sherut Leumi law
outside of the military framework. Gedolei Yisroel were
strongly united against the initiative. The first
letter was published in 5712 (1952) signed by HaRav
Isser Zalman Meltzer, the Tchebiner Rov, HaRav Tzvi
Pesach Frank and HaRav Zelig Reuven Bengis zt"l. They
wrote: "The prohibition against drafting women fully
includes Sherut Leumi... we turn to all Jewish
daughters... and you are obligated to prefer being
jailed and to accept poverty and suffering and to
sanctify His name yisborach..."
Ma'azanim Organization: "To Imbue the Awareness of
Economic Balance Among Families"
Ma'azanim has existed and operated actively in Ramat
Beit Shemesh for the past five years. Its success in
balancing family budgets and rehabilitating families
has pushed it to open branches in Elad, Beitar and
Modi'in Illit. The organization was established by
professional economic consultants whose goal is not
only to guide families but to bring them to a state of
self-sufficiency in balancing ongoing family budgets
and standing up to special emergency situations which
cause a drain on the regular budget.
Unique Gathering of Dozens of Halachic Authorities on
Halacha and Psychiatry in Bnei Brak
A meeting of rabbonim on "Halacha and Psychiatry" took
place in the beis medrash of "Chanichei Hayeshivos
Hilchos Chaim" on Rechov Raavez in Bnei Brak, with the
participation of HaRav Mordechai Gross, Gavad of
Chanichei Hayeshivos, and eighty-five other rabbonim
and morei tzedek of the community.
Kiryat Bnei Torah Will Participate in the Tender for
Beit Shemesh Gimmel
The Central Kiryat Bnei Torah intends to submit its bid
for the tenders in the prospective housing projects of
Beit Shemesh Gimmel. It thus hopes to provide an answer
for the pressing housing shortage by creating a kirya-
complex with a special character tailored specifically
to a bnei Torah population of yeshiva alumni, in the
spirit and under the ongoing guidance of gedolei
Yisroel.
Netanyahu Objects to Declarations for a Government
Without Chareidim
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that he is
opposed to the declarations of the Likud MKs about
creating a future government coalition without any
chareidi parties. In a party forum, he protested that
such an idea is inconsistent with Likud policy and that
those members were not justified or authorized in
expressing it.
The above quote was said in the name of HaRav Chaim
Kanievsky, in his presence, at a large, very impressive
gathering which took place this past motzei Shabbos in
the Wagschal Hotel in Bnei Brak, celebrating the
completion of study of Orchos Yosher and the
commencement of study of Orchos Tzaddikim.
Prayers for HaRav Brevda shlita
We wanted to thank everyone who has joined and will
join the tefillas rabbim for the refuah shleimoh of
HaRav Shlomo Leib ben Miriam (Brevda).
One of the most awe- inspiring spectacles to behold in
the Chassidic courts was the holy avodoh of the Ateres
Yeshua during the hakofos on Hoshanoh Rabbah.
