Last week, in a clear attempt to placate his Arab partners in
his war on terror, U.S. President George W. Bush declared
that the Palestinians should have a state of their own.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair followed his lead on

with the age-old Jewish practice of circumcision. A registered
doctor must be present at the religious ceremony and must inject
the infant with an analgesic or
an anesthetic. This means that no Jewish circumcision may be
performed on Shabbos or yom tov, as the injection violates Shabbos and
is not necessary to
perform the circumcision. According to reports received by Yated
Ne'eman, the matter became an issue of public debate in Sweden and
it was dicussed in the popular media.
From the coverage it received in the Israeli media, the story
of how Pinchas and Mali Cohen survived a terrorist shooting
attack on Chol Hamoed Sukkos seemed nothing out of the
ordinary. Most papers gave the story just a few lines or
incorporated it into larger stories on terrorism in Eretz
Yisroel.
Large-scale work on the infrastructure for Jerusalem's new
transportation system has begun in Pisgat Zeev. The plan is
based on a light rail transport system. Construction is being
carried out along the first route to run from Pisgat Zeev
along Yaffo Road to Mt. Herzl. Auxiliary bus lines will
travel from Derech Hevron Road through the city center until
the outskirts of Ramot.
Expanded Shearis Yisroel Kashrus Activity The activities of the Shearis Yisroel kashrus network gained
considerable impetus toward the end of the past shmittah
year. The BaDaTz of Shearis Yisroel prepared up-to-date writs
of pruzbul in order to enable Jews to fulfill this
mitzvah in the best manner possible. Tens of thousands of
copies were distributed throughout the country, accompanied
by explanatory information. Special botei din were set
up for the pruzbolim. Agudath Israel Welcomes High Court's Acceptance of School
Choice Case The United States Supreme Court's announcement that it will
decide whether Cleveland's school voucher program is
constitutional was welcomed by Agudath Israel of America,
which has long been a proponent of permitting the use of U.S.
tax moneys by parents to educate their children in the schools
of their choice. Mechanics' Machinations: Shoeva Junction Con Artists The con artists on the main Jerusalem-Tel Aviv road continue to find easy prey.
A few months ago, Yated Ne'eman brought to its readers'
attention the story of a prominent Jew who fell prey to con
artists on the Shaar Hagai-Abu Ghosh section of the Jerusalem-
Tel Aviv highway. Project Tvunot Concludes Neighborhood Lectures; Starts Hands-
On Parenting Workshops A well-received series of Jerusalem neighborhood lectures by
leading rabbonim and mechanchim discussing today's
chinuch challenges, gave parents much to think about
during the summer, with appearances by Rabbi Paysach Krohn in
Ramat Beit Shemesh and Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz in Har Nof. Yad Eliezer Helps the Hungry and Needy in Eretz Yisroel The 12-member Cohen family was already receiving Yad Eliezer's
monthly food deliveries when Mr. Cohen developed a serious
illness. Seeing that the staple foods would not be sufficient,
the organization responded by providing the family with
prepared Shabbos meals each week.
Now that it has joined the worldwide fight against terror, the Palestinian Authority decided that it must ensure that there are no big demonstrations in support of master terrorist Osama Bin Laden. The Palestinian street, however, is upset that the Americans are trying to catch him. They support the ideas he expresses and, apparently, the tactics he favors. Thus, last week there was a very large demonstration in support of Bin Laden in Gaza and in several other places. Observations: The Rise and Fall of Chromatis by Yated Ne'eman Staff About a month ago, the management of the Israeli high-tech company Chromatis Networks announced the closure of the firm by its owner, the American communications equipment giant Lucent, telling the staff that all 130 employees, including the founders, would be laid off. The announcement was notable for the fact that just over a year ago, in June 2000, Lucent paid a record price of $4.7 billion to buy the firm.
Condolences -- From the Other Side Nichum Aveilim -- for whom? To absolve us of our social duty? Or to offer genuine comfort to the mourners. To provide merit for the deceased himself in his final Judgment by recounting his good deeds. A simple, universal plea... IN-DEPTH FEATURES Rabbi Mordechai Miller: He Changed the Face of Torah
Jewry Additional Luach Information Davening for Rain In Eretz Yisroel we start to say vesein tal u-motor levrocho on the night of 7 Cheshvan, that falls this year on Tuesday night, parshas Lech Lecha, Oct. 23. In chutz le'aretz we do not request rain until Tuesday night, the night between Dec. 4 and Dec. 5. There are years when this comes out as late as the eighth night of Chanukah (once in a hundred years). 1. If one who lives permanently in Eretz Yisroel began to say in Eretz Yisroel vesein tal u-motor on 7 Cheshvan and afterwards traveled to chutz le'aretz, if he intends to return to live permanently in Eretz Yisroel he continues to say vesein tal u-motor. However, if he has decided to live permanently in chutz le'aretz he must stop saying vesein tal u-motor, and only start when everyone starts in chutz le'aretz. 2. If one who lives permanently in Eretz Yisroel traveled to chutz le'aretz before 7 Cheshvan, even if he intends to return to Eretz Yisroel before December 4 (in a year that does not precede a leap year of 29 days in February), since he is in chutz le'aretz he does not say vesein tal u- motor in the brocho of shomei'a tefilah. 3. If one who lives permanently in chutz le'aretz visits Eretz Yisroel after 7 Cheshvan, even if he intends to return before December 4 (see note 2), since he is in Eretz Yisroel he must say vesein tal u-motor in its regular place--the brocho of borech aleinu. (Mishnah Berurah and Birur Halocho Kamma Vetanina, 117).
