Large-scale work on the infrastructure for Jerusalem's new
transportation system has begun in Pisgat Zeev. The plan is
based on a light rail transport system. Construction is being
carried out along the first route to run from Pisgat Zeev
along Yaffo Road to Mt. Herzl. Auxiliary bus lines will
travel from Derech Hevron Road through the city center until
the outskirts of Ramot.
At the same time, an international tender has been issued for
the setup and operation of the light rail's first line, to
be patterned on the BOT (Build, Operate, Transfer) system.
The project is being carried out jointly by the Ministry of
Transport and the Jerusalem Municipality.
Pisgat Zeev residents received a colorful informational
brochure about the project detailing the projected work
planned for the neighborhood. Work is expected to continue
for some eighteen months. The first stage is the laying of
electric, water, and telephone cables where they will not
interfere with the transportation lines.
When the line becomes operational, the ride from start to
finish, Pisgat Zeev to Mt. Herzl, will take twenty-some
minutes, including stops. This refers to public
transportation lines that will operate even before the light
rail begins operational.
