Over 40,000 Jews Turn Out for Torah Day in France
Over 40,000 Jews from throughout France gathered at an
enormous site on the eastern end of Paris for Torah Day,
where various organizations were presented and speeches given
to reach out to the French Jewish community and strengthen
and preserve ties.
Before the arrival of President Nicolai Sarkozy at
tefillas Ne'iloh at one of Paris' main synagogues, and
at the French Rabbinate on Rue de la Victoire, the President
received the heads of the Consistoire at the Elysees Palace.
Servants opened the door of the car that brought the
president of the Consistoire, Jean Kahn, along with his
deputies, Yoel Mergui, Tzvi Amar and Charles Shulman, and
escorted them to the office of Sarkozy, who met with them for
40 minutes. Sword-bearing guards stood stiffly at the gates,
but it remained unclear whether they were posted to honor the
Consistoire heads or subsequent visitors.
Infrastructures Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer was on hand at
a dedication ceremony for a large water tower built by
Mekorot for Modi'in Illit residents.
The gravesite of Rebbe Nachman of Breslav zechuso yogen
oleinu is in danger of foreclosure following a Ukraine
Supreme Court ruling regarding a large debt to a construction
contractor who is also a member of parliament. The court
determined Breslav chassidim must pay the contractor $3
million including penalties for a debt that was originally
$100,000.
The General Prosecutor has issued a decision that the Shabbat
Work and Rest Hours Law does not apply to stores at
kibbutzim. Rabbonim and public figures are concerned that the
move could lead to an unprecedented breach.
MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni sent an urgent letter to the State
Comptroller, retired judge Micha Lindenstrauss, following
alarming findings revealed during a Knesset Education
Committee meeting according to which the chareidi education
system is severely discriminated against in the area of
transportation budgeting.
Local rabbonim in Eretz Hakodesh are expressing staunch
opposition and evaluating modes of action in response to a
series of regulations formulated by the Religious Services
Authority to undermine their authority and the religious
services provided in every city.
Arachim Holds Seminar in France Hundreds took part in an Arachim seminar in Paris, including
many participants with no previous exposure to
Yiddishkeit.
The Supersol Directorate has confirmed the appointment of R'
Sholom Fisher, known for his many chessed activities
and as a major supporter of the Torah world in Eretz Yisroel,
