Over 40,000 Jews Turn Out for Torah Day in France

Over 40,000 Jews from throughout France gathered at an enormous site on the eastern end of Paris for Torah Day, where various organizations were presented and speeches given to reach out to the French Jewish community and strengthen and preserve ties.

French Rabbonim Ask Sarkozy for Support

Before the arrival of President Nicolai Sarkozy at tefillas Ne'iloh at one of Paris' main synagogues, and at the French Rabbinate on Rue de la Victoire, the President received the heads of the Consistoire at the Elysees Palace. Servants opened the door of the car that brought the president of the Consistoire, Jean Kahn, along with his deputies, Yoel Mergui, Tzvi Amar and Charles Shulman, and escorted them to the office of Sarkozy, who met with them for 40 minutes. Sword-bearing guards stood stiffly at the gates, but it remained unclear whether they were posted to honor the Consistoire heads or subsequent visitors.

The gravesite of Rebbe Nachman of Breslav zechuso yogen oleinu is in danger of foreclosure following a Ukraine Supreme Court ruling regarding a large debt to a construction contractor who is also a member of parliament. The court determined Breslav chassidim must pay the contractor $3 million including penalties for a debt that was originally $100,000.

General Prosecutor: Work and Rest Hours Law Does Not Apply to Kibbutz Stores
