MK Gafni Asks State Comptroller to Address Anti-Chareidi Discrimination in Bussing Budget

By Yechiel Sever

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni sent an urgent letter to the State Comptroller, retired judge Micha Lindenstrauss, following alarming findings revealed during a Knesset Education Committee meeting according to which the chareidi education system is severely discriminated against in the area of transportation budgeting.

"The transportation budget for students in the official school system is NIS 900 million ($230 million)," Rabbi Gafni noted in the letter, "whereas Chinuch Atzmai is budgeted a total of NIS 21 million ($5.3 million), and according to my estimates the transportation budget for the entire chareidi education system comes to NIS 25 million ($6.4 million), i.e. 2.3 percent of the overall bussing budget, while the chareidi school system accounts for 20 percent of all students. If the budget were based on equality as the law requires, the transportation budget for chareidi schools would be NIS 180 million ($46 million)."

In his letter Rabbi Gafni also notes that four years ago it was decided to institute eligibility criteria, but these criteria are only applied to chareidi schools.
