Comptroller's Report: Account Management Seriously
Flawed
by G. Kleiman, Betzalel Kahn and Itim
While the media constantly focuses on alleged irregularities
in the administration of Torah institutions, reports that
turn out to be unfounded and inciting, a highly critical
report on corruption at Israeli universities received minimal
coverage in the mainstream press.

Shemesh

The City of Beit Shemesh agreed to the majority of requests
by chareidi directors of educational institutions and United
Torah Jewry city councilmen to allocate classrooms and other
facilities in various neighborhoods, based on the needs of
the institutions and the composition of the neighborhoods. At
a press conference called by Mayor Daniel Vaknin, a list of
the new allocations was released, including 161 classrooms
designated for the chareidi sector, compared to just 40 new
classrooms for national-religious and secular schools.

OPINION &
COMMENT
Look for the Fraud Where it is Being Committed
The State Comptroller published a scathing report of
widespread abuses in the research budgets of Israel's major
universities. The combined research budgets of these
institutions is over NIS 600 million -- more than the total
government support for yeshivas altogether. The total budget
of the universities is about ten times greater at some NIS 6
billion.
Comfort on the Tablets of Our Hearts
by Rabbi Mordecai Plaut, based on a shiur of a
rosh yeshiva in Yerushalayim
As we read the seven haftorahs of comfort that lead
up to the Yomim Noraim, these insights into the true
meaning of true comfort should prove very valuable.
OBSERVATIONS
Observations: Nature Still Beats Industry
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
An ocean sponge living in the deep sea grows thin glass
fibers capable of transmitting light better than industrial
fiber optic cables that are now used for telecommunication.
The natural glass fibers are also more flexible than
manufactured fiber optic cable that cracks if bent too
far.
