Ministers say 2005 Budget will Hurt the Weakest

Likud ministers criticized the proposed state budget for 2005 when Prime Minister Ariel Sharon presented it to cabinet this week. Health Minister Danny Naveh in particular said that it will cause great harm to the sick and the elderly.

The Education Minister signed a series of new criteria for funding Torah institutes, including a 24 percent increase in the budget for yeshivas, bringing it up to NIS 39 million ($7.4 million) per month. Education Ministry officials said funding for the past two months will be transferred this week. Current funding had been withheld as long as the new criteria were not approved.

Pisgat Ze'ev Residents Vandalize School to Prevent Religious Children from Sharing Building

A group of residents from Jerusalem's Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood committed acts of vandalism and destruction at the Ish Shalom government school after the municipality decided to transfer part of the building to a Torah-based school attended by 382 children from the neighborhood. The City of Jerusalem is considering whether to file criminal charges against those responsible for the incident.
