until Tuesday night, July 27. It is now 1935 years after the
churban of the second Beis HaMikdash.
The Shabbos after Tishah B'Av is called Shabbos
Nachamu because of the haftorah in Yeshaya 40
"Console, console My people" that is said on that Shabbos.
This haftoroh starts a series of shivah
denechemosah (seven haftoros of consolation).

A South African Perspective of the Australian Jewish Community
by D Saks
Australia's Jewish community, today exceeding the 110,000
mark, can attribute much of its growth over the past two
decades to immigration from South Africa. In June-July this
year, South African Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris was given an
opportunity to observe how South African expatriates were
coping, both in Australia and neighboring New Zealand during
a busy speaking tour on behalf of the Anti-Defamation
Commission.

OPINION &
COMMENT
Now is the Time for Mourning
There are plenty of things in the world today for us to worry
about. There is the general decline in morality of the West,
which expresses itself in so many areas. The West is
certainly sliding down a very slippery slope that can only
end very unpleasantly, and we have at least an obligation to
protest.

Education Towards Ahavas Yisroel
by Sue Shapiro
Once, I took a cab ride with a driver who appeared to be far
from Torah and mitzvos. Along the way, he started
talking about his brother who had moved to America. "He moved
to California and became religious," he murmured. After a
pause, he added softly, "If I lived in California, I'd also
be religious."
