IDF Rabbi to Help Identify Astronaut's Remains
by Yated Ne'eman Staff and M Plaut
NASA authorities have told Israeli officials that remains of
four of the astronauts killed in the Columbia shuttle
disaster on Shabbos had been found among the debris that fell
to the ground by Tuesday. NASA believes that the remains of
two of the astronauts can be identified relatively quickly,
but that DNA examinations of the remains will likely take
some two weeks. NASA does have DNA samples of all the
astronauts on file.
Ilan Ramon: The Death of a Jew in Space
by Yated Ne'eman Staff and M Plaut
Col. Ilan Ramon, the Israeli astronaut who died last Shabbos
aboard the space shuttle Columbia, was a soft-spoken combat
pilot.
Thoughts about the Tragedy
Dear Ilan,
With great trepidation I write to you of two world shaking
events that took place yesterday, Shabbos Mishpotim.
Both involved men by the name of Ilan (lehavdil bein
chaim lechaim), both men with great interests in
aerospace and both events had to do with Shabbos.
UTJ Election Results
by Betzalel Kahn
United Torah Jewry received a total increase of 10,000 votes
in comparison to the previous elections due primarily to the
natural population increase in chareidi cities, which
overcame the out-migration in recent years of thousands of
families that have moved to burgeoning towns such as Beit
Shemesh, Beitar Illit, Modi'in Illit, Elad, Tel Tzion,
Rechasim, Netivot and others.
Mehadrin Buses in Israel
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
A recent survey revealed that in the United Kingdom there are
about 600 vehicles on the road for every 1000 people. A
similar survey in Israel revealed that there are only 250
cars on the road for every 1000 people. However, in chareidi
circles, where car ownership is proportionately even lower,
there are only a mere 50 cars for every 1000 people. The
result: Chareidim are the heaviest users of public
transportation in Eretz Yisroel.
Rabbinical Delegation Visits Kaliningrad
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
A delegation lead by Chief Rabbi A. Shayevitch of Russia and
Rabbi Aba Dunner, secretary general of the Conference of
European Rabbis, visited Kaliningrad last week. The
delegation visited the grave of Reb Yisroel Salanter on the
day of his yahrtzeit and recited Tehillim at
the vandalized grave, where the recently-dedicated tombstone
has already been badly damaged.

transfer of ownerships of apartments will be advanced thanks
to substantial financial assistance provided by R' Heshy
Friedman of Canada, who received blessings from maranan
verabonon recently.
