NYC Has Less than a Million Jews, but Metropolitan Jewish Population Stable At 1.4 Million -- Conservative and Reform Jews Rapidly Decreasing
by M Plaut

According to a study released this week by the UJA-Federation of New York, the overall New York Jewish community of the metropolitan area has remained stable at 1.4 million people over the last twelve years, but the population of New York City itself has dropped below a million for the first time in a century. The proportion of Jews identifying themselves as Conservative and Reform has dropped from 70 percent to 55 percent in only 11 years.

Israel Insisting on Stop in Terrorism
by M Plaut and Yated Ne'eman Staff

Israel is insisting on a halt to terror activities, including Hamas, before moving ahead with the road map. Israel will not transfer even limited security control to the Palestinians as long as the Hamas continues to carry out terror attacks, according to a senior Israeli security official. At the same time, international pressure is being brought to bear on Hamas, as the European Union discussed whether to outlaw the Hamas political wing. Its military wing has long been blacklisted.

S A Jews Struggle Against Propaganda
by D Saks, South Africa

South African Jews are making little headway in countering negative portrayals of Israel -- and increasingly also of Jews -- in the mainstream media, despite statutory provisions prohibiting the dissemination of "hate speech" based on race, religion, gender or ethnicity.

by Eliezer Rauchberger

Education Minister Limor Livnat told a Knesset plenum that she supports transferring advance funding for chareidi cultural organizations and promised to evaluate why these allocations from the 2003 budget have been delayed.

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

A modest dedication ceremony for the Mercaz Limudei Eretz Yisroel, under the auspices of the Beis Medrash LeHalocho BeHityashvut HeChakla'it, drew Maran HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv and HaRav Shmuel Auerbach, as well as the Beis Medrash's roshei kollelim, rabbonim, Knesset members, city heads and public figures to the construction site at the entrance to the Har Nof neighborhood in Jerusalem.

Media Myths
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Last week, the IDF carried out an unsuccessful mission to eliminate Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi, who survived the helicopter strike upon his vehicle in Gaza City. An outpouring of media criticism has followed.

The Knesset Yehuda Cheder in Sanhedria Hamurchevet
by D.F.

A few days before the end of the Pesach bein hazmanim, I decided to recharge my spiritual batteries by visiting a cheder and interviewing its staff. What could be more inspiring than the sight of tinokos shel beis rabbon cheerfully studying Torah?

OPINION & COMMENT

Keep Your Eye on the Ball

This is the advice often given in sports games in which flinging or kicking or hitting a ball is a crucial element. It embodies an important lesson that applies in many areas of life: focus on the key issue, the important subject whose progress is the main object of interest and do not get distracted by side issues and sometimes even dramatic developments that can catch the attention of many other players in the game but are not important in the long run.

True Comfort
by R. Gil

During the longest week of my life, when I was sitting shiva for my father, I made a mental note of how a mourner feels, and of some of the do's and don'ts for visitors whose sole intent is to comfort, in order to help other mourners in the future.
