Jews Attacked in Paris
by Arnon Yaffeh

Approximately two hundred Arabs from the suburbs of Paris attacked Jews on Sunday (14 Elul) on the Champs Elysees in Paris. Witnesses said that a mob of Arabs marched along the avenue shouting "Death to the Jews" and "Destroy Israel." A Jew who passed by in a car said that the rioters looked like "death squads" of antisemitic organizations, and shouted the very same slogans which were heard on Champs Elysees prior to the Second World War at the height of Nazi hysteria.

Gedolim Speak Out About Periodicals
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

"It is obvious and goes without saying that all magazines published with commercial considerations in mind and which were not founded by gedolim, do not convey the correct hashkofoh."

Making a Big Difference -- Even on a Small Scale
by Moshe Schapiro

Just before Rosh Hashana last year, Vaad HaRabbonim in Eretz Yisroel learned of a father of eight who needed $100,000 for a kidney transplant. The Vaad found 12 people committed to raising $2,000 each, and then placed an ad in the newspaper, beseeching people to help. But it seemed like collecting the remaining $76,000 would require a miracle.

OPINION & COMMENT

Is it Reasonable to Go Study in Eretz Yisroel in the Midst of an Intifadah?

Many people, both inside and out of Eretz Yisroel, are bewildered by the recent events: should one come here or not?

OBSERVATIONS

Observations: Americans Work Harder

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

A report, issued by the International Labor Organization, a UN agency, found that American worker put in far more hours each year than any other country's workers. Americans work 137 more hours a year, or about three and one-half weeks, than Japanese workers who are the second hardest workers. The Japanese had long been at the top for the number of hours worked, but in the mid-1990's the United States surpassed Japan.

HOME & FAMILY

Charity Begins in the Home --
The Family Gemach

Adapted from a piece by Chaim Walder

The Shaefers live in the central area of the country. They have ten children; the head of the family is in kollel, the mother teaches. Needless to say, they barely make it to the end of the month.
