Pesach: The Victory of Light and Truth

"Will the formula at last be found, by which love can coexist peaceably with justice, and freedom with law -- on this earth? Will light and truth finally gain genuine victories? Or will science and art debase themselves and increasingly become accomplices of sensualism and despiritualization? Will the mind of man bend ever lower under the yoke of sensuality?"

Additional Luach Information

On Tuesday night, the eve of 14 Nissan (April 18) is the search for chometz - bedikas chometz, and the chometz is burnt the next morning on Erev Pesach until the end of the zman sereifas chometz.

On Wednesday, Erev Pesach, 14 Nissan (April 19), is the fast of the firstborn - Ta'anis Bechoros.

Pesach falls on Thursday, 14 Nissan (April 20), in Eretz Yisroel, and on Thursday and Friday in Chutz Le'aretz. The days until Shevi'i Shel Pesach are Chol HaMo'ed. Eruv Tavshilin must be made on Wednesday, Erev Pesach (April 19) for those living in Chutz Le'aretz or intending to return to Chutz Le'aretz.

From Mussaf of Yom Tov we say morid hatal in Shemoneh Esreih instead of vesen tal u-motor livrocho.

From Thursday night, Motzei Yom Tov Rishon Shel Pesach, we count sefiras ha'omer until Shavuos.

The seforim hakedoshim write to make a meal on the sixteenth of Nissan to remember the se'udas Esther that she made when Homon was hung (Mishnah Berurah, 490:2 from the Mogen Avrohom).

Shiurim of a Keziyis Matzoh

Hand Matzoh

If the shiur of a keziyis is the volume of 50 cubic centimeters its weight is 22.5-27.5 gram (.7875-.9625 ounces).

If the shiur of a keziyis is the volume of 45 cubic centimeters (a half of a double-sized beitzah without its shell) its weight is approximately 20.3-24.8 gram (.7105-.868 ounces).

If the shiur of a keziyis is the volume of 33.33 cubic centimeters (a third of a double-sized beitzah without its shell) its weight is approximately 15.0-18.3 gram (.525-.6405 ounces).

Machine Matzoh

Concerning the shiur of a keziyis machine matzoh the Chazon Ish ruled (as cited by HaRav Yaakov Yisroel Kanievsky zt'l) it being a half to two thirds of a matzoh.

For actual practice one should ask a moreh horo'oh.

See Birur Halocho Orach Chaim Kamma VeTeliso'oh 475.

The last day for Kiddush Levonoh -- Nissan

One can make Kiddush Levonoh in the entire world until Tuesday, the eve of 14 Nissan (April 19), at 3:38 A.M., according to the Summer Clock, Israeli time. In most of Europe the final time is 2:38 A.M., in New York until 8:38 P.M., but in western USA and Canada it is impossible to make Kiddush Levonoh on the night of bedikas chometz and their final time is the entire Monday night, the eve of 13 Nissan (April 17). In the eastern countries one can make Kiddush Levonoh the entire night of bedikas chometz.

The astronomical full moon is Tuesday night at 8:41 P.M., approximately seven hours earlier than the nigud emtzo'i, and twelve hours and thirty-five minutes earlier than the end of the full fifteen days from the molad. This month one should not make a berochoh even bedi'eved following the fifteen full days after the molad, and it seems that he should only make a berochoh with shem and malchus until the nigud emtzo'i.
