The Rabbonim of New York have warned that a new initiative of the New York State Education Department (SED) in issuing guidance for secular studies in private schools is a very serious problem for the future of Jewish education. The main issue is that it empowers the state to make curriculum decisions about which subjects must be taught in Yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs, how long they must be taught, and how many hours of the day must be taken away from Limudei Kodesh in order to accommodate these requirements. This is a grave threat to our mesorah.
There was a recent gathering in memory of Maran HaRav AYL Shteinman. Many rabbonim spoke. There were also some remarks from the Degel Members of Knesset, who spoke often with HaRav Shteinman about public policy.
The above was declared by chairman of the Knesset Finance Committee, Rabbi Moshe Gafni (Degel HaTorah) to Yated Ne'eman following a request from the government for a High Court postponement of a case on the issue. This is the third time of such a request for a space of an additional half year regarding the Reform and Conservative appeal for official recognition of their `conversions'.
The Ministry of Transportation is introducing changes in the way roads are numbered in Israel. Many will retain their old numbers but there will be changes.

Israeli observers noted that there were earth and stone movings in the forest as shown in the lower image. The right shows the area before the work and the left after the work. The top image shows the route of the tunnel.

How to Avoid the Path of Bloodshed
By Mordecai Plaut
Part I
In this week's parsha Yaakov, the father of us all, gave us, on his deathbed, guideposts for all history. In his remarks to Yehudah, in the middle of several pesukim that most commentaries take as referring to Moshiach, Yaakov says (11): "He washes his garments in wine, and his clothing (susoh) in the blood of grapes."
The Day the Lion's Roar Terrified the Land

Part II
A Degel HaTorah rally took place one decade ago last Pesach at the Yad Eliyahu Auditorium in Tel Aviv. The climax of the event was the speech of Maran HaRav Eliezer Menachem Shach shlita. This was a historic speech, which reached the eyes and ears of millions. Both in Eretz Yisroel and abroad it was given top coverage by the written and electronic media, putting Degel HaTorah in the public eye for several days. In those days, Degel HaTorah was an independent political party with its own policies determined by its Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah. It had two representatives in the Knesset.
Our Joint Responsibility
by HaRav Moshe Man
Part I
We have merited to see the Torah world grow and expand throughout many spheres. This growth includes Torah schools for children, yeshivos ketanos, yeshivos gedolos and kollelim as well as shiurim in gemora and mussar for those who do not study Torah the whole day. Many people seriously aspire to advance in Torah study, good character traits and yiras Shomayim in the way our gedolei dor have paved for us.
