Rabbonim Reject Government Attempts to Tempt Yeshiva Students to Join the Army
Rabbonim reacted very strongly against the Government moves on Sunday to extend a program of national service for chareidim. Gedolei Yisroel rejected the repeated attempts to seduce yeshiva students to leave their yeshivas and said that it was part of a longstanding focused attempt to undermine the yeshiva world and to weaken the values held dear by Jewry whose members dedicate their lives to Torah study as yeshiva students and kollel avreichim.

Torah, gathered in Mattersdorf and in the beis medrash

Mendel Weinbach zt"l on his final journey. An unusual
talmid chochom and marbitz Torah for decades, HaRav
Weinbach was one of the founders of the Ohr Somayach
yeshiva, as well as other Torah initiatives including
the Mercaz Bais Yaakov in Jerusalem. His clear shiurim
and deep shmuessim were well known and drew many
listeners. Thousands of talmidim passed through the Ohr
Somayach yeshiva over the years and spread out all over
the globe.
As a son of the first Admor of Radzin R' Yaakov, HaRav

Reading the business pages of the secular press lately
can be quite depressing. Japan is in an economic slump
that has lasted more than a decade and cannot shake
itself out of it. The worldwide telecommunications
industry is in a huge slide downhill: the second
largest communications company in the US, Worldcomm, is
bankrupt. Lucent, a huge company that was steady as a
rock for three generations has gone from more than
150,000 employees just two years ago to a planned
35,000 within the next three months -- and it is
typical of many.
...Nobody was happier than Rabbi Gamliel. He quickly took from his rucksack the silver menorah and the Chanukah candles, and made his preparations to light the first flame with the shehecheyonu blessing.
"What are doing, Rabbi Gamliel?" his companions asked him in amazement. "You will attract the attention of the Russian patrol and then all will be lost."
Based on an address by Rav Zev Leff, Aish HaTorah, 28
Kislev 5761
A man is walking peacefully down the street. Out of
nowhere, someone appears, wielding an iron bar. He
swings it mightily at the man's legs. Both of his knees
are shattered immediately. The injured man collapses to
the ground, writhing in pain and the attacker stands
over him. As the victim prepares for a final blow, the
attacker smiles politely at him.
