Holocaust Claims Committee to Grant 1,315 Survivors
Restitution Grants
The Tel Aviv District Court ruled that the Israel Claims
Committee must pay 1,315 Holocaust victims a total sum of NIS
13.5 million ($4 million) or NIS 14,500 ($4,500) per claimant
after neglecting to carry out its task by not informing them
of the proper procedure to receive restitution grants from
the German government. A claim by another 550 survivors was
rejected because the statute of limitations had expired.
The Jewish population of Baghdad, which numbered 130,000 five
decades ago, is now down to less than a minyan according to a
New York Times report. The handful of Jews remaining
in the Iraqi capital live in fear and are very reluctant to
have their names published or be interviewed in person.
El Ghriba, an ancient synagogue on the island of Djerba about
500 km (300 miles) from Tunis, was packed with
mispallelim this year. Like every year thousands of
Jews, most of Tunisian descent, streamed to Djerba for Lag
B'Omer to search the lost past of the isle of chachmei
haTorah of 250 years ago.
Jews in Budapest want to continue living as Hungarians.
According to the International Herald Tribune both
religious and assimilated Jews have been suffering from
various forms of persecution. A shattered glass front of an
ad agency in the Jewish quarter serves as a grim reminder of
the doubled rate of cultural and political antisemitism.
Members of the Mifal HaShas Haolami Executive Board made a
round of visits to the homes of gedolei Yisroel to
start off the annual fundraising drive. They received warm
welcomes, generous contributions and blessings for success in
the fundraising drive for their great work toward promoting
Torah study.
Major Israeli companies are enlisting to help Tishma, a
school and center for autistic children, as part of the
