Lowering Cholesterol
By Dr. Reuven Bruner, Ph.D.

Diet and exercise can play a big role in staying healthy. One of the most important steps you can take is to lower your blood cholesterol level. High levels of cholesterol can lead to "plaque deposits," which narrow your arteries and make it difficult for blood to circulate. The following foods will help lower your cholesterol levels and may also contribute to your heart's overall well-being. However some of these may be infested with bugs.

* Soy products such as tofu, soy milk, soybeans, textured soy protein, etc., can raise the level of good (HDL) cholesterol in your blood.

* Foods high in soluble fiber such as oat bran, oatmeal, beans, peas, rice bran, barley, citrus fruits, strawberries, and apple pulp can lower cholesterol.

* Foods high in insoluble fiber can reduce your risk of heart disease. They include whole-wheat breads and whole- wheat (bran) cereals; grains such as rye, rice, and barley; cabbage, beets, carrots, Brussels sprouts (full of bugs), turnips, and cauliflower; and apple skins.

* Fish, particularly salmon, mackerel, and herring, contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids which help lower cholesterol, reduce blood pressure, decrease abnormal heart rhythms, and reduce the risk of blood clots.

* Flaxseed oil, green leafy vegetables, soybeans, nuts, and canola oil also contain smaller amounts of omega-3s.
