Hizbullah Attack on the Northern Border

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

On Monday afternoon, the Hizbullah terror organization initiated an attack against Israeli civilian and military targets, an attack which included rocket fire, mortar shells and gunfire in the areas of Mettula, Rajar and Mount Dov. An IDF officer and soldier situated in IDF posts were severely wounded in this attack.

At the same time, Hizbullah cells carried out a number of attacks against IDF posts in the Rajar and Mount Dov regions in an attempt to kidnap IDF soldiers. IDF forces were successful in preventing these attempts and were able to disable the Hizbullah cells.

The IDF said that Hizbullah used its full arsenal — mortar shells, Katyusha rockets, antitank missiles and sniper fire. No IDF activity was carried out in the area prior to this attack. Overall, 11 IDF soldiers were wounded in this attack. Four terrorists are known to have been killed.

In response to these attacks, the Israeli Air Force attacked a structure used as a command post by the Hizbullah terror organization and several access routes in the area.

The IDF commander of the area said that this attack had been in the planning for a long time, and they haven't seen such a wide scale coordinated attack by Hizbullah in a long time.

Mortar shells and rockets have also landed in populated areas. A house in Mettula was damaged. It's been a long time since the civilian population in northern Israel had to enter their bomb shelters.

Israel said that it sees the Lebanese government as responsible for any activity carried out from its territory.
