Ban on Tuna

by G. Kleiman

The Health Ministry has issued a public health warning against the consumption of Man chunk tuna in oil packaged in round, 960-gram cans (700 grams dry weight) bearing a red Tov Taam label and manufactured between August 1, 2005 and November 9, 2005, which may contain histamines that can cause allergic reactions.

The Health Ministry issued directives to remove the product from store shelves following a report of facial reddening in 30 toddlers at a day-care center in Kiryat Gat. After an inquiry by the Ashkelon Health Bureau found they had consumed Man tuna, samples tested in a laboratory were found to contain high levels of histamines. The substance is liable to cause a burning feeling in the mouth, facial reddening, changes in blood pressure, headaches, itching and in some cases nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
