Confrontation with Missionaries Trying to Operate in Meah
Shearim
By Betzalel Kahn
Christian missionaries try to ensnare unsuspecting Jews
around the world and recently they ventured into Jerusalem's
Meah Shearim neighborhood. Furious residents tried to oust
them from the neighborhood, but a show of violence by one of
the missionaries led to a confrontation with the intruders
and the police, who were summoned to protect the missionaries
and even wound up beating residents.
Five missionaries wearing orange shirts bearing words from
their organization arrived in Meah Shearim. A few minutes
after they began striding through the neighborhood, a throng
of local residents gathered around to protest their presence.
According to one resident a fracas broke out after one of the
missionaries began kicking some of the avreichim who
were protesting their presence.
Meanwhile another group representing the same organization
descended on Geula, trying to persuade passersby to join
them.
The missionaries called the police, who arrived at the site
swiftly and, rather than removing the missionaries from the
neighborhood, policemen from a riot-control unit began
beating avreichim. Eyewitnesses said the policemen
beat avreichim ruthlessly and some even needed medical
attention following the acts of police violence. Two
protesters were arrested.
