New Israeli-European Conversion Scandal
Vaad HaRabbonim and CER in Joint Effort to Strengthen
European Conversion
By Betzalel Kahn, M Plaut, and Yated Ne'eman Staff
According to the Israel news organization News First
Class, Rabbi Chaim Druckman, a former MK (NRP) whom Ariel
Sharon appointed several years ago to head the conversion
system in Israel, himself violated the law including forging
a conversion certificate. The government conversion system
was set up to encourage non-Jewish immigrants to undergo
"conversion," claiming that the red tape at established
botei din made conversions over difficult.
013 Barak — A Kosher Telco
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Kashrus certification has long since extended beyond the
realm of food products. Today every company seeking to
increase its share of the chareidi market knows that the more
problematic a product is and the more it is liable to contain
elements that are unfit from a religious standpoint, the
greater the need to win a seal of approval.
Barak Draws Political Fire for Remarks on Citizenship
Law
By Betzalel Kahn
High Court President Aharon Barak drew political fire for
saying that if the Knesset extends the validity of the
Citizenship Law it would be disqualified by the High Court.
Barak called the majority decision to reject an appeal
against the Citizenship Law only a "technical loss" for
him.

Iran Denies Legislation Requiring Jews to Wear Yellow
Patches
By G. Lazer
Following a flurry of reactions around the world, Iran was
forced to issue an official announcement denying media
reports that it planned to legislate a law that would require

to comment on the report, saying it was not relevant to
Canada.

Torah is For Everyone and Everything
As we know, all of Klal Yisroel accepted the Torah on
Shavuos. It was given to all of them, and not just to some
elite group. Everyone is invited — even required
— to study it to the best of his ability. One of the
highest and most prestigious callings in life is harbotzas
Torah — spreading Torah as far and as wide as
possible.
Might and Joy in His Place
A Shmuess from the Mashgiach HaRav Shlomo Wolbe,
zt'l
In this previously unpublished shmuess, the
Mashgiach carefully builds a panoramic exposition of some
fundamental lessons. It contains many profound yet practical
ideas. A word of advice — it is not casual reading;
each section should be read slowly and carefully and digested
before continuing.

Fay and Eli are back in New York City, after months and

escaped a murder attempt as they were about to enter their

apartment building.

ASK THE SHADCHAN
What to Look for in a Girl
by Rebbitzin Nomi Travis
Question: I'm a teacher in a Bais Yaakov Seminary. I get many
phone calls about girls. If I would tell you, dear
Shadchante, the kind of questions I'm asked, you
wouldn't believe me. Beyond the usual general inquiries, some
of the mothers drive me crazy asking unimportant details.
I'll give you an example; the other day they wanted to know
the exact shade of blond/brown of her hair!

Additional Luach Information
According to the Ramo (494:3) we do not say tachanun
from Rosh Chodesh Sivan until after Isru Chag (there
are other minhogim that do not say tachanun
until after the seven days of hashlomoh that follow
Shavuos).
On Rosh Chodesh Sivan we do not say tachanun as we do
on every Rosh Chodesh. The second of Sivan is called Yom
HaMeyuchas since after yetzias Mitzrayim Hashem
commanded Moshe to say to bnei Yisroel: "Now therefore
if you will obey My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then
you shall be My own treasure from among all peoples"
(Shemos 19:5) to prepare them for Torah. Afterwards,
the third, forth, and fifth of Sivan are the Sheloshes
Yemei Hagboloh when bnei Yisroel waited for
kabolas HaTorah (Mishnah Berurah 494:8, and see
Shabbos 86-88).
Shavuos falls on Friday, 6 Sivan (June 2) and in
Chutz La'aretz also on Shabbos, 7 Sivan (June 3). An
eruv Tavshilin must be made on erev Shavuos,
Thursday, in order to be permitted to cook on the first day
of Shavuos, Friday, for Shabbos.
