Oops! The CBS Goofed: Chareidi Schools Do Not Get Twice as Much Money!
By Betzalel Kahn and M Plaut

The Government Statistician Prof. Shlomo Yitzchaki admitted that the Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS) released incorrect data regarding the chareidi education budget. In a letter to Degel HaTorah Secretary MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni he admitted that the funding figures for the chareidi institutions were very high because they included teacher salaries, while salaries were not included in the general education system figures.

Violence Reduced as Everyone Waits for Developments Among Palestinians; Disengagement Plods Ahead
by Mordecai Plaut

Palestinian violence is reduced — but still way above zero — as all the parties wait to see developments in the wake of the death of Yasser Arafat. Press reports say that Hamas hopes to assume a significant political role in the new power structure.

MK Rabbi Gafni: If You Don't Provide Funding, Don't Charge Us Taxes
by Eliezer Rauchberger

Speaking during a Knesset plenum, MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni attacked the government for its imperviousness to problems in the area of economics and its harsh treatment of the poor and the unfortunate. "Any heartless individual with no understanding of economics could have made an economic plan like the one the current government devised. It's as simple as can be: take from the poor and save a lot of money.

BUG UPDATE, KISLEV 5765
Prepared by Devorah Plaut and Ruth Levy
(based on information provided by Rav Moshe Vaye, except where noted otherwise)

1. ONIONS

The state of onions has improved, and the recommendation to separate all the layers of all onions is no longer in effect. This means that for regular Israeli-grown onions, if: a) no green leaves are sprouting from the top of the onion AND b) the onion is firm, AND c) after cutting off 1/2 cm. from the top of the onion (starting to count the 1/2 cm. from where the onion starts being round), an inspection of the cross-section of the layers shows that all the layers are tightly packed together, with no spaces between them, then only the inside and outside of the first layer and the outside of the second layer need to be cleaned or checked.

An Analysis of a Question that is Now Moot

We always talk about framing our view of the world in moral terms, and the passing of Yasser Arafat has given us a chance to show a very clear example of this.

A Look into the Mind
by Chaim Walder

The ostrich is well known for peculiar behavior: if pursued it buries its head in the sand, based on the belief that if it cannot see the predator, the predator must no longer exist or cannot see it.

A Shidduch is Made
by Bruchy Laufer

Based on a true story with facts obviously changed

In the thriving Jewish community of Yehopetsville lived the beautiful daughter of Sima and Gershon Shoen. Vivienne had been blessed with an abundance of talents and gifts from Hashem. She was tall, smart, attractive and of a happy disposition. At twenty-five plus, she held an office job in the business section uptown. She was putting away hundreds of dollars each month to be able to support a learning husband. Someday.
