Line Ten Joins Jerusalem's Mehadrin Lines

by Betzalel Kahn

Egged began operating Line 10-Mehadrin in Jerusalem this week as part of route changes on Lines 24, 22, 19, 9-Alef, 27, 27- Alef and 154. Line 9 Alef-Express and Line 19 Alef were also introduced.

According to Egged spokesmen, details regarding the operating guidelines, route and frequency of Line 10-Mehadrin are being worked out in a series of meetings with City Councilman Rabbi Shlomo Rosenstein and representatives of Vaad Hachinuch Haolami. As on all Mehadrin lines, women board and alight via the rear door, where an automatic hole-puncher is installed. The forward seats are reserved for men and the rear seats for women.

Egged says the frequency and route will not be less than previously. Ram Oren, Egged Jerusalem's liaison to the chareidi public, will closely oversee the line. Yossi Chachkes, director of Egged operations in the Jerusalem area, says the company is committed to providing efficient service tailored to meet the needs of the chareidi sector. "The specialized lines serve the chareidi sector and they do not create friction with other sectors," he said. "Egged has learned lessons from the specialized lines already running and is implementing them."

Rabbi Rosenstein, whom the Mayor assigned to work on the issue of public transportation in Jerusalem, said the Mehadrin lines, set up at the behest of gedolei Yisroel, have been running for a year in close cooperation with representatives from Vaad Hachinuch Haolami. "The operation of the new line is another milestone in the positive cooperation between Egged and the chareidi public," he said.

Egged also announced several changes and improvements on other routes and the addition of new lines in the city. Line 9 will now run to Kikar Davidka and the stops from Rechov Strauss to Mt. Scopus in both directions have been eliminated. To travel from downtown to Mt. Scopus, passengers are advised to take Line 19, which runs from Hadassah Ein Karem to Mt. Scopus.

The following routes have also undergone changes: Line 19, Line 22, Line 24, Line 24-Alef, Lines 27 and 27-Alef. The changes went into effect on Sunday.

Egged says passengers should take note of detailed, printed information on these routes handed out on board these bus lines.
