Day
by S. Bruchi
"Am Yisroel has survived throughout the generations
only in the merit of the Oral Torah, for which it has made
great sacrifices and from which its entire existence stems.
Nothing remains of those who kept only the Written Torah and
not the Oral Torah, groups like the Sadducees and the
Karaites.

OPINION &

Happiness Must Bring Unity
Succos is known as zeman simchoseinu, the time of our
happiness, but modern society, and certainly modern secular,
non-Jewish society, has completely lost touch with what
happiness is.

Observations: US Stock Market Returns are Expected to be Lower
by Mordecai Plaut
Many investors know that US stocks return an average of about
10 percent a year over the long run, and they use that
information to guide their investment decisions. However, if
they dig a little deeper, they might allocate their money
somewhat differently.

Have a Heart
a true story by C. Ofek
Ears they have but cannot hear.
Not only `idols.' There are people who have ears that don't
hear, eyes that don't see and hearts that don't beat true in

Additional Luach Information
Yom Tov Sukkos falls on Thursday, 15 Tishrei (Sep. 30)
in Eretz Yisroel, and in Chutz Le'aretz on both
Thursday and Friday, 15 and 16 Tishrei (Sept.30-Oct.1). We
are obligated to eat lechatchilah more than a
beitzah of bread on that night, while sitting in a
sukkah, with kavonoh to fulfill this
mitzvah. In addition, we must have kavonoh that
we are doing so in memory of yetzias Mitzrayim and the
anonei kovod that protected us in the midbar
from the sun and the rain.
For those living in Chutz La'aretz, an eruv
tavshilin must be made on erev Sukkos.
Hoshana Rabba falls on Wednesday, 21 Tishrei (Oct. 6).
At Shacharis we add the pesukei dezimrah of Shabbos
except for nishmas, all of the hoashana
prayers, and afterwards we beat the hoshanos on the
floor.
In Eretz Yisroel, Shmini Atzeres and Simchas
Torah fall on Thursday, 22 Tishrei (Oct. 7). In Chutz
Le'aretz, Shmini Atzeres falls on Thursday, and
Simchas Torah falls on Friday, 23 Tishrei (Oct. 7-8)
and an eruv tavshilin must be made on erev Yom
Tov.
Yizkor is said on Shmini Atzeres.
In Shemoneh Esrei we add Morid HaGeshem from
Mussaf of Simchas Torah.
The achronim write that even after Sukkos we
should not step on the sechach since it is
tashmishei mitzvah like tzitzis and a
lulav (Mishnah Berurah 638:24).
On the Shabbos that we read about the ma'aseh
bereishis we start saying Borchi Nafshi
(Tehillim 104) every Shabbos until Shabbos HaGodol.
Before Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, we do not say Yom
Kippur Koton, because it is then the month of Tishrei.
Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan falls on Friday, Oct. 15 and
Shabbos Oct. 16.
