In addition to its criticism of the new French government and
its head, Dominique de Villepin, the Jewish community is now
also concerned over the ministerial appointment of a
controversial suburban Arab activist who supports the
antisemitic Euro Palestine Party.
The Finance Ministry General Accountant wrote a letter to
Knesset Finance Committee Chairman MK Rabbi Yaakov Litzman
pledging to reduce inspections and audits of yeshivas from
their current level of four per year to one every three
years. Four per year is an unusually high level that is not
found in any other area. The intense inspections have
confounded the critics who expected to uncover massive fraud
but found nothing significant. The legal advisor to the City of Beit Shemesh dispatched
municipal inspectors to remove signs hung on the balconies of
apartments owned by chareidi residents. The signs called on
pedestrians arriving at the commercial center in Ramat Beit
Shemesh Alef to honor nearby residents' sensitivities by
dressing modestly. However an examination of city ordinances
reveals that signs can only be removed after the mayor issues
a warning.
MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni attacked women's organizations for
interfering with the appointing of dayanim to the
Rabbinate botei din.
A charter plane brought Israeli Jews on the first direct
flight from Israel to Tunisia, where they participated in Lag
BaOmer events in Djerba and then continued on a 10-day
"journey to their roots." The travel agency that organized
the trip rented ten hotels on the island and kashered them
for the large group.
Hundreds of protesters demonstrated against harming Jewish
graves and the derision shown toward the entire religious and
chareidi public around the country. Security guards hired by
Derech Eretz beat the demonstrators in the presence of a
contingent of policemen, who even arrested five of the
demonstrators.
Shavuos, Kabbolas Hatorah — it's in the air.
Every rebbe, every teacher, is trying to instill into his
talmidim the importance and relevance of the Sinai
experience, attempting to develop a true ahavas haTorah
and ahavas hamitzvos.
HaRav Moshe Shmuel Shapira Back in Eretz Yisroel HaRav Moshe Shmuel Shapira shlita returned home Monday
night after a two-and-a-half-week stay in the US for urgent
medical care as the Torah world prayed and followed his
condition with concern.
During the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday the government
approved the setup of a department of religious services in
the Prime Minister's Office as part of the reform program for
religious services the Prime Minister pledged to launch.
Israel Offers Rail Link between West Bank and Gaza Israel has suggested constructing a special rail line linking
the Gaza Strip and West Bank to allow Palestinians in the two
areas easy. The tracks would run from the Erez checkpoint to
the Tarqumiya crossing near Hebron. The idea was approved by
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon before it was presented to the
PA.
Torah Knowledge and Other Knowledge
We are completely different since that Shavuos, having
received the Torah. We would not want to imagine ourselves as
we would be without the Torah, but in modern times there are
all too many, and all too powerful, demonstrations of the
depths to which man can sink all around us. HaRav Wolbe's Attitude to Torah and to Torah Im Derech
Eretz
In the wake of the recent correspondence in London's
Jewish Tribune about HaRav Wolbe's view on Torah-
im- Derech Eretz, the following extracts from his
sefer Alei Shur (vol. I p. 295) are relevant. It
should be noted that the issue here is the view of HaRav
Wolbe in light of his background. (The translation is
literal, and all bracketed notes are in the original unless
otherwise indicated.)
Ruth
"I couldn't possibly understand then that Ruth was a true
product of her upbringing. A Stamford Hill girl who had
reached her ultimate role, her tachlis."
