MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni attacked women's organizations for
interfering with the appointing of dayanim to the
Rabbinate botei din.
Rabbi Gafni issued his remarks following a campaign by a
group of secular and national-religious women against the
appointment of notable talmidei chachomim as
dayanim in Rabbinate botei din. The group
reached the height of its involvement when it opposed the
appointment of dayanim during a meeting of the
Committee for the Appointment of Dayanim.
"Recently a coalition of women's organizations, as they are
referred to, decided to wage war and battle against the
selection of chareidi dayanim," Rabbi Gafni told the
Knesset. "Just because a person is chareidi he is not fit to
be a dayan. Their representative sat . . . in the
Constitutional Committee and battled against a proposal by
Yitzchak Levy or at least challenged a law intended to assist
agunos. This supposed representative of the women's
organization—who does she represent?
"They waged war against the election of a dayan to the
Beis Hadin Hagodol who was eventually selected and he turned
out to be an excellent dayan. One of the best, and
they did not step forward to apologize," said Rabbi Gafni.
