Jewish Roots: A Sensational Media Report and the True Facts
by Rabbi Nochum Eisenstein

Several years ago I publicized an article in the Yated about various rabbinical personalities and groups who claim that their standards meet all Orthodox requirements -- without detailing what these requirements are. At that time I was referring among other things to the standards of conversions performed by the IDF and to the kashrus of certain food products.

Gedolei Yisroel from every stream of Torah-true Jewry have set up a special rabbinical committee, assisted by legal and technology experts, to lead a campaign against the spiritual stumbling-blocks caused by cellular phones. (See remarks of HaRav Wosner in this week's "Opinion" section.)

Sharon Agrees to Investigate a Referendum
by Yated Ne'eman Staff and M Plaut

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon succeeded Monday in delaying the battle over whether to hold a national referendum on his unilateral disengagement plan, forcing his opponents to settle for appointing a committee to look into the matter. The committee is unlikely to reach any decision until after the Knesset is scheduled to approve the disengagement plan, next Tuesday.

By Shlomo Boruch Abelesz -- Melbourne

Shabbos Voting

As a child I recall how at every election frum Yidden had serious concerns about their voting arrangements. The reason was that elections in Australia are always held on Shabbos -- and voting is compulsory with nonattendance punishable with a fine!

Riding Out the Storms: Moral Corruption Leads to Social Ruin

Sometimes we read the Chumash and the words shake us with the immediacy of newspaper headlines. (We spent last Shabbos shaken up and did not think that the insight bears waiting until next year.)

SCIENCE WONDERS OF OUR WORLD
Vultures: Good, Bad or Ugly?

by Tova Robinson

The vulture suffers from a poor public image. Perpetually cast as the villain, the vulture is viewed as predatory, ominous and just plain ugly. In defense of vultures and other creatures like them, let's take an imaginary tour of the world as it would be in the absence of scavengers and decomposers.
