Several years ago I publicized an article in the Yated
about various rabbinical personalities and groups who claim
that their standards meet all Orthodox requirements --
without detailing what these requirements are. At that time I
was referring among other things to the standards of
conversions performed by the IDF and to the kashrus of
certain food products.
The Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Degel Hatorah held an
emergency meeting at the home of HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman
after Succos to discuss crucial matters affecting talmudei
Torah and Bais Yaakov schools.
Gedolei Yisroel from every stream of Torah-true Jewry
have set up a special rabbinical committee, assisted by legal
and technology experts, to lead a campaign against the
spiritual stumbling-blocks caused by cellular phones. (See
remarks of HaRav Wosner in this week's "Opinion" section.)
Following consultation with gedolei Yisroel a
demonstration has been scheduled to take place Thursday at
Jerusalem's Kikar HaShabbat to protest the desecration of
graves in Acco.
HaRav Ezriel Auerbach, and HaRav Mordechai Gross became
members of the Shearis Yisroel beis din last week, at
an impressive ceremony held at the home of Maran HaRav Yosef
Sholom Eliashiv, shlita. The new appointments promise
to elevate the Shearis Yisroel kashrus organization, founded
by HaRav Shach and HaRav Chaim Shaul Karelitz zt"l.
For most Americans, the US elections will be in another 14
days. For others, the elections are already here.
Sharon Agrees to Investigate a Referendum Prime Minister Ariel Sharon succeeded Monday in delaying the
battle over whether to hold a national referendum on his
unilateral disengagement plan, forcing his opponents to
settle for appointing a committee to look into the matter.
The committee is unlikely to reach any decision until after
the Knesset is scheduled to approve the disengagement plan,
next Tuesday.
Shabbos Voting
As a child I recall how at every election frum Yidden had
serious concerns about their voting arrangements. The reason
was that elections in Australia are always held on Shabbos --
and voting is compulsory with nonattendance punishable with a
fine! Request for Security Arrangements to Allow Foot Travel to
Kever Rochel The Knesset Public Appeals Committee has asked the Defense
Minister to look into the possibility of allowing foot travel
to Kever Rochel on the 11th of Cheshvan, Rochel Imeinu's
yahrtzeit, and throughout the year on Shabbosos and
chagim. Riding Out the Storms: Moral Corruption Leads to Social
Ruin
Sometimes we read the Chumash and the words shake us
with the immediacy of newspaper headlines. (We spent last
Shabbos shaken up and did not think that the insight bears
waiting until next year.) SCIENCE WONDERS OF OUR WORLD
The vulture suffers from a poor public image. Perpetually
cast as the villain, the vulture is viewed as predatory,
ominous and just plain ugly. In defense of vultures and other
creatures like them, let's take an imaginary tour of the
world as it would be in the absence of scavengers and
decomposers. Eighty Years for Yeshivas Chevron Lomzha and the Mir, the Yeshiva and the City
