The Israeli Left's Geneva Initiative Launched
by M Plaut and Yated Ne'eman Staff
At a ceremony attended by many former officials in
governments around the world -- but no current leaders -- the
agreement reached after more than two years of private
negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians was feted in
Geneva. Although many critical parts were not yet formulated,
its initiators -- mainly former Labor party MK Dr. Yossi
Beilin -- felt that it can already serve as a basis of public
pressure to force changes in Israeli-Palestinian
relations.

the Torah World in Eretz Yisroel
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The 81st Annual Agudas Yisroel of America Conference closed
Sunday with calls to stand by the chareidi public and the
Torah world in Eretz Yisroel and to act to strengthen Judaism
in the US. The theme of the weekend was, "Measured Gains,
Growing Pains: Shouldering the Burden of our Blessing."
Instructions for Kohanim Entering Hospitals
Guidelines by Maran HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv
1. Kohanim should avoid entering hospitals as much as
possible.
2. When a Kohen must visit a hospital urgently he is
permitted to enter on condition that the hospital is such
that most of the day it does not have tumas meis, or
at least half the day it does not have tumas meis. The
basis for this hetter is that when necessary we can
say "sofeik tumoh bereshus horabim tohor" also applies
regarding tumas kohanim.
Yeshiva Ketanoh Directors Called on Not to Fill Out
Questionnaires
by Betzalel Kahn
Based on consultations with maranan verabonon, on
Sunday it was decided the yeshivos ketanos would not
return the Education Ministry's questionnaires on the topic
of "tigbur limudei Yahadut" (increasing Jewish
studies) at this stage, following the ministry's unexplained
cut of NIS 110 million after the budget was transferred from
the Ministry of Religious Affairs to the Ministry of
Education.
Many Recent Ethiopian Arrivals Have No Jewish
Connection
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
About one third of the Ethiopians who have come to Israel
over the past three years and submitted applications for
conversion had no connection to the Ethiopian-Jewish
community and therefore their status as immigrants is
questionable, according to Rabbi Israel Rosen, former head of
the Chief Rabbinate's conversion authority and now a member
of the special conversion court.

OPINION &
COMMENT
The Core of Yated is Ideology -- Not Business or Politics
In his report last week that covered the most recent election
campaign, the State Comptroller generally gave United Torah
Judaism (UTJ) -- and most of the political parties -- high
marks for the campaign that they ran. One issue that he
raised, however, was the that in some newspapers that are
identified with political parties, in the period leading up
to the elections, "there appeared a mixture of political
advertising and newspaper stories whose content indicated
that they were also election propaganda."
