Victory for Likud with 37 Knesset Seats
Meretz Falls to 6; Shinui Rises to 15; UTJ stays with 5

With 100 percent of all the ballots counted aside from those of soldiers and diplomats, the Likud Party has won 37 (19 in previous Knesset) seats in the 16th Knesset, while Labor has won 19 (25). The Shinui Party got 15 (6) seats, Shas got 11 (17), the rightist National Union 7, left-wing Meretz 6 (10), United Torah Judaism 5 (5), and the National Religious Party, 5 (5). Yisrael B'Aliya headed by Natan Sharansky won 2 (6) seats, Am Echad 4 (2) seats and the Arab parties a combined 9 (10) seats.



Upsurge in South African Antisemitic Activity

Just one day before the close of the secular year, a total of 38 graves in the Strand and Pineland Jewish cemeteries of Cape Town were vandalized. The attacks received widespread media coverage and were roundly condemned by local religious leaders, although subsequent investigation has suggested that the extent of the damage was exaggerated.

Criminal Charges Expected Against Prosecutor

Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein is likely to file criminal charges against attorney Leora Glatt-Berkowitz, the senior Tel Aviv prosecutor who leaked details of a police investigation into a loan made to the prime minister's family to Ha'aretz crime reporter Baruch Kra, a senior judicial source said.
