DAYS GONE BY
Remembrance

by Mrs. Hess

"Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations..."

We have been stimulated and inspired by the memoirs of Anni Rephun Fruchter and gained much.

Now, in her second appearance in Yated ("Kristallnacht" in Av was the first), Mrs. Zippora Hess, 81 years old and Berlin-born, tells of mesirus nefesh for Yiddishkeit in the Yekkishe tradition. We have much to learn from these past generations.

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
Words, Meaning and Jargon

by R' Zvi Zobin

Jargon is a specialized vocabulary whereby a non- literal meaning is given to a word to indicate a specialized meaning. Jargon saves time because instead of using a lengthy explanation or non-technical word, the `initiated' can use just one word to express all he needs to convey. Furthermore, often the word of jargon conveys various subtleties and overtones of meaning that cannot be expressed in regular language.

Organizing Our Lives
by Bayla Gimmel

In his popular work, Listen to Your Messages, Rabbi Yissochor Frand encourages us to integrate within our lives the seemingly unimportant small things we see and hear each day. Each of the incidents we encounter is a message to us and we can choose to listen and learn, or to ignore what we are experiencing.

Bedwetting
by A. Ross M.Ed.

Many parents have asked me for advice on school children who still wet their bed. It is not my field and I have little experience in the subject. Thus, everything in this article is from research done during the past year and from two interviews granted me by experts in this field who see patients every day.

PARENTING WITH MENUCHA
Rules -- Necessary and Useful

by Menucha Fuchs

Let us imagine for a moment what the world would be like without rules and without order. The sun rises and sets without warning. It gets dark and light alternately without order. Sun, wind, rain, snow and heat all mixed together wreak havoc, while the sea rises and floods the land. We couldn't possibly put up with such a disorderly world.

COMMUNICATION
Speak Straight
or -- Are You Listening?

by LMW

For some of us, it comes naturally, for others, it's a struggle. Learning how to speak straight can be something you pick up by osmosis. No sweat if your immediate family travels this track, but if you are accustomed to speaking in a more diplomatic, roundabout fashion, it takes a lot of effort to change your manner of speech. Straight is direct and can have negative impact if you do not choose your words with care.

Your Medical Questions Answered!
by Joseph B. Leibman, MD

Continuing from last week about head injuries.

A person who has sustained a head injury and who is unconscious, should be transferred to the hospital. It is important to be accurate about how long the person was out, as this will affect how we treat the patient. Head injured patients can have skull fractures, bleeding around the brain (this is called epidural hemorrhage), bleeding within the brain (in trauma usually a subdural hemorrhage), and diffuse axonal injury, which is injury to a large part of the brain, without bleeding. We'll discuss each one.

High Blood Pressure May Cost You Your Wits
by Dr. Reuven Bruner, Ph.D.

High blood pressure is a no-win game. It increases your risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular disease. Now add another unpleasant effect: risk of decline in mental ability.
