Arafat: I Have Declared Many Cease Fires!
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
In a rambling television interview that was stranger than
fiction, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat said
that the PA had complete control over the situation in the
territories and that he had given explicit orders for
upholding a cease-fire. "Not only did we declare a cease-
fire, we stood by it and declared a state of emergency," he
said. He said he would jail any Palestinian who says otherwise.
EU, for the First Time, Says Arafat Must Combat Terror
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The European Union (EU) changed its previous approach and
told Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat on Sunday
to dismantle "the terrorist networks" of Hamas and Islamic
Jihad and declare an end to the violent uprising, as it
toughened its line on Palestinian attacks. The statement from
the 15-member bloc was unprecedented, as the EU is has been
very supportive of the Palestinians. The EU also insisted on
"a public appeal in Arabic for an end to the armed intifadah."

by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The High Court refused to postpone a hearing on the interim Knesset law passed nine months ago to extend current draft deferral arrangements for yeshiva students.

Cutting Down on Wedding Expenses
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The rabbonim of Agudas Yisroel will soon issue guidelines
setting limits on various aspects of marrying off children,
including the engagement and the wedding, according to
reports in the press. Aspects covered are said to include the
number of people who are to be invited to the wedding, the
number of musicians hired to play, and even the type and
amount of food that should be served.

In Search of Security
What will be?
That is a question that is often heard these days in Israel
as the presumptions that many have entertained for many years
have crumbled. Is there a peace process with a "partner" who
tries his best to murder you? Can Arafat make a deal? If he
goes then what or who will take his place? What will be
without tourism, without a high-flying stock market, without
increasing economic growth?

Politica: Crisis in a Teapot
by E. Rauchberger
Last Monday, just hours before a special meeting of the
government following the wave of terror attacks that struck
the country, members of the Ichud Leumi-Yisrael Beiteinu
Party convened a meeting of their own. Sitting at the head of
the table were the two party ministers, Avigdor Lieberman and
Benny Alon.

Keeping the Lamp Burning
by Yisca Shimony
Bright sunlight broke through the haze of the night and Lea
Attiya, a widow, woke up abruptly. She looked through her
window to the hills and exclaimed, "It's Friday. I must
hurry!" The sun, a ball of red fire, was inching its way up
over the top of the mountain-horizon. Its rays, like red
arrows, spread all over the sky.
