The Battle over Jenin is not Over
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The biggest battle over Jenin may not be the fierce fighting
on the ground that has stopped, but what will be recorded by
world opinion as having happened there. UN Secretary-General
Kofi Annan has appointed a three-member fact-finding team,
led by former Finnish prime minister Martti Ahtisaari, to
report on what happened during Israel's military assault on
the Jenin refugee camp.
Beis Knesses Destroyed and Sifrei Torah Desecrated in
Second Antisemitic Attack in Tunis
by Arnon Yaffeh reporting from Paris
According to reports by local Jews a well known beis
knesses in Tunis was almost completely destroyed in an
antisemitic attack when unidentified thugs broke into the
beis knesses, tore the sifrei Torah and threw
them to the floor, tore siddurim, destroyed the
furniture and hung Palestinians flags and photographs of
Arafat on the bimah.
50,000 Jews Gather To Daven In Lower Manhattan
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Under leaden skies heavy with the promise of rain, more than
50,000 Jews from across the Orthodox spectrum gathered in
Lower Manhattan this Sunday to recite Tehillim and
pray for the safety and security of Jews in Israel, where
violence against innocent men, women and children has been
perpetrated with sickening regularity, as well as in other
countries where antisemitic attacks on Jewish citizens and
institutions have markedly increased.
French Extremist Successful in First Round of Elections
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
In a stunning upset that was not predicted by any of the
polls, far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen bested prime
minister Lionel Jospin in the first round of France's
presidential elections to face a runoff election with current
president Jacques Chirac.
UTJ Opposes Cuts; Interest Rate Raised
by Eliezer Rauchberger and M. Plaut
UTJ and Shas have announced that they will oppose the new
cuts in the state's budget for 2002-3, currently being
proposed by the government. The main reason for this
opposition is the government's intention to once again harm
the country's weak sectors and the large families, a course
of action which includes a serious cut in the Children
Allotments of Bituach Leumi.
Operation Defensive Shield Ends -- A Summary
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The IDF wound up Operation Defensive Shield this week as
troops completed their withdrawal from Nablus and parts of
Ramallah. Twenty-nine soldiers and border policemen were
killed and 127 wounded in the offensive, launched on March

infrastructure, confiscate weapons, and arrest fugitives.

conflict have increasingly come under scrutiny by the South
African media.

by Yated Ne'eman Staff
HaRav Boruch Dov Povarsky, rosh yeshiva in Ponevezh, is to

OPINION &
COMMENT
When There are Unnatural Troubles . . .
There is no doubt that the attacks we are experiencing are
far from the normal course of human affairs. Though we do not
see the Arab suicide bombers as studies in mesiras
nefesh as some do -- we see them rather as low creatures
who have no appreciation of any human life including their
own -- still it is clear that the actions of the bombers and
of the society that supports them are not within the bounds
of normalcy.
