Kristallnacht
Written with Yonina Hall

Chazal said it all -- Pas Shacharis. Every day, not only during the school year. Regularity in eating will start every day off on the right foot. For MOMs too! Now's the time to begin the habit.

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
The Wealth that Lies in Poverty

by R' Zvi Zobin

"Abba! Can I have a bike?"
"I'm sorry, Chaim, I cannot afford one now."
"But all my friends have one. Why can't I have one?"
"I told you, Chaim. I just don't have any money now."

Welcome to the Factory
by Pennee Lauders

"YOU ARE NOT CALLED UPON TO COMPLETE THE JOB, yet you are not free to evade it; if you have studied much Torah, much reward will be given you. Your Employer can be trusted to pay you for your work and know that the grant of reward to the righteous will be in the time to come" (Ovos 2:21).

Jealousy
by A. Ross, M.Ed.

Jealousy is a trait with which we are born. Like all other middos, it is more pronounced in some people than in others. We can use this trait as a tool to improve ourselves or we can endeavor to weaken it. King Shlomo says in Shir Hashirim, "Jealousy is as hard as the grave" (8:6). And in Mishlei, "Envy rots the bones" (14:30). Then years later, R' Elozor haKappor (Pirkei Ovos 4:28) said, "Envy, greed and lust for glory remove a person from the world."

Homemade Books for Children
by Masha Wolf M.A.
Child Therapist, Play Therapy and Guidance for Parents

Part I

Homemade books are a creative and fun way to address children's daily challenges and emotional needs in a nonjudgmental way. Parent-made books can help give children a sense of acceptance and understanding which they formerly lacked. Robert Zeigler, author of Homemade Books to Help Kids Cope, advocates three types of books to help children: books to describe a situation, books to define feelings and books to make an empathic statement.

Your Medical Questions Answered!
by Joseph B. Leibman, MD

Last week we mentioned diabetes as a major cause of amputations. This is due in part to impaired disease fighting capability, but also from poor circulation, as diabetes affects the small vessels and impedes the flow of blood.

Lifelong Nutrition
by Dr. Reuven Bruner, Ph.D

Here is one of your favorite questions:

Q. Can regular aspirin use affect one's nutritional needs?

A. Aspirin is the drug of choice for certain types of arthritis and many older people with arthritis take aspirin at a high daily dosage level that may potentially cause loss of iron through microscopic bleeding of the gastrointestinal tract.

Poet's Corner

On the Threshold
by Tzippora Zien

So this is how you find me, my sweet friend,
With book in hand and tears' glint in the eye!
I must admit it's seldom that I bend,
Allowing other souls to see me cry!

Perhaps you think I read a tragic tale
Of families begging daily for their bread:
Or that of someone sickly, wan and pale
For whom some tears of pity I have shed.

Oh no! This story was not sad! In fact,
The heroine related with delight
How Providence had caused her to come back,
And happy now, she basks in Torah's light!

That mine were tears of joy I must deny!
Alas! The world repents! Pray, when will I?

What Is Man?

by Tzippora Zien

Cast on the Torah your discerning eye
And do not hesitate to note detail.
The answer to your question, "Who am I?"
Will solve your lifetime's problems without fail.

Free will's the essence of created men.
Their constant task to choose the good or not.
Our flesh will crave fulfillment of a yen.
Our souls prefer good character be sought.

As moment passes moment we do choose
Through precious opportunity to grow.
But for the Torah's guidance we would lose
The sight of this straight path on which we go!

Had not Hashem revealed to us His Law
We'd all be easy prey for evil's claw.
