Extensive Convention Coverage!
by A. Shafran, N. Grossman and M. Plaut
For four days beginning last Thursday, Orthodox Jewish
religious leaders -- roshei yeshivos, admorim and
rabbonim representing a broad spectrum of those dedicated to
Torah from across the country and around the world --
admonished the thousands of Jews who attended Agudath Israel's
78th national convention...
Israeli PM Switches Tracks, Agrees to Elections
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, bowing to what seemed
inevitable, agreed on Tuesday to call new elections. The date
remains to be set. Barak said that elections could be as long
as nine months away, though most opposition leaders expect the
poll to be held in five or six months.
Court Clears Arab Journalist of Encouraging Terror, Convicts
Leader of Kach of Sedition
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The High Court cleared journalist Yusef Jabarin of expressing
support for a terrorist organization during the first
intifadah, while convicting Binyamin Kahane of sedition during
the election campaign of 1992 before Kach was outlawed. Both
decisions reversed previous decisions of the High Court
itself.
Israel Blamed Wrongly for Palestinian Deaths
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Mohammed Aldura, the 12 year old whose death was made famous
when it was captured by French television reporters, was most
likely killed by a Palestinian policeman and not by IDF fire,
according to the results of an IDF investigation that OC
Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yomtov Samia presented to reporters
in Tel Aviv on Monday.

Hakodesh, a special prayer and fast day was called for last
Monday erev rosh chodesh Kislev by maranan

We Need Rain for Shmitta
by Yitzchok Roth
The water level of the Kinneret reached the lowest in its
entire history this past Sunday (Cheshvan 28). Only 20
centimeters separate it from the new red line which the
Kinneret Administration declared last summer, which is itself
is a meter lower than the old red line.
OPINION &
COMMENT
WThe Emergency is Over, Let's Get On With It
Everyone, from politicians to pundits to military analysts,
says that the current violence will last for a while. No one
has suggested any way for us to do anything to end it, aside
from expressing our willingness to talk and to make peace, and
there is no doubt that we should be ready and willing to do so.

Legislating Elections
Evidence that early elections are nearing is the series of
election laws which have been laid before the Knesset to debate
and vote on. During normal times Knesset members prefer to
address various issues, but when elections approach, as would
be expected, an assortment of bills proposing election changes
appear.

My Mother's Hands
by Anni Rephun Fruchter
There was a time when my mother's hands were soft and white
with carefully trimmed and buffed nails. On her left hand
gleamed her plain wedding band. It was her only jewelry, even
though my father was a successful businessman in Kalsruhe,
Germany.

The last day for Kiddush Levonoh -- Kislev
One can say Kiddush Levonoh in the entire world until
Monday, the 14th of Kislev (Dec. 11), at 8:31 A.M., Israeli
time. In Eretz Yisroel and most of Europe the actual final time
is therefore the entire Sunday night, the eve of 14 Kislev.
However, in north-west Europe and America the final time on
Sunday night is according to the difference in time zones in
comparison to Eretz Yisroel.
The astronomical full moon is at 9:04 A.M., two hours and
thirty two minutes later than the nigud emtzo'i. It
seems to me that until the astronomical full moon it is
preferable to make a berochoh with shem and
malchus than to forfeit it altogether.
(Birur Halocho, IV, Orach Chaim 426 (pg. 300).
Y.A.Z.
In chutz Le'aretz from Monday night, the eve of 8 Kislev
(the night of Dec. 4-Dec. 5, 2000) vesen tal u- motor
levrocho is now added in Shemoneh Esrei until
Pesach. This takes into consideration that February of 2000 was
29 days. See Kittzur Shulchan Oruch 19:5.K
