Miracles and Violence: A Car Bomb in Or Yehudah
by M. Plaut
An afternoon bomb in the market area of the Tel Aviv suburb
of Or Yehudah set a stolen car ablaze and ignited several
other cars in its vicinity. In order to increase the scope
of damage, the bomb, which was in the trunk of the car, was
filled with nails, like other bombs used lately by
Palestinians. Eight people lightly wounded by the bomb were
hospitalized and released. Senior police officers said it
could only be described as a "miracle" since the area was
packed with pre-Independence Day shoppers.

Ex-IDF Research Chief Held for Espionage
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
After a day-long flagrant violation of a court gag order and
disregard of military censorship by most of the nation's
media, the state allowed the publication Sunday of the
arrest of retired military scientist Brig.-Gen. (ret.)
Yitzhak Yaakov, 75, a former chief of IDF research and
development and so-called father of Israeli hi-tech, who has
been held in custody since March 28.

Million
by P. Moses
During the Haskalah, propaganda against the Torah world
centered around what was known then as "leaving
golus." Leading maskilim waged a tough
campaign to persuade youth to abandon the Torah halls which
they defined as "golus culture" and to join
"progressive, modern" culture.

In Kiryat Gat, Israel it's two o'clock and the sun is
beating down on the schoolyard. A woman is waiting there
with her son. She looks anxious, while he looks like he
would rather be somewhere else. At long last the van pulls
up and all the rabbis file out.

Back to the Beis Medrash
"Everyone knows" that in order to properly preserve printed
materials they must be microfilmed. For more than 30 years
libraries and commercial companies have committed their
documents to microfilm in order to ensure permanent records.
Between 1968 and 1984 the United States Library of Congress
destroyed more than $10 million worth of books in order to
microfilm them, according to author Nicholson Baker.

NOSTALGIA Escaping Amolek, Sailing on the Ile de France, "Wus is
Der Shteiger?"
by Anne Rephun Fruchter
April 1937. By now we had all our papers, visas and
passports to emigrate to the USA. We were impatiently
waiting for May 3, when we would leave Karlsruhe. Every day
our home was filled with treasured friends coming to wish us
well. Somehow, for each member of our family, memories
washed over us. My brothers and I were born in this city; we
had a history here.

The last day for Kiddush Levonoh -- Iyar
One can make Kiddush Levonoh in the entire world
until Tuesday night, the eve of 15 Iyar (May 7), at 1:11,
according to the Summer Clock, Israeli time. The final time
in most of Europe is at 12:11, in eastern America at 8:11,
and in New York it is impossible to make a berochoh
on this night, and surely not in west U.S.A. and Canada.
Their final time is the entire Sunday night, the eve of 13
Iyar.
The astronomical full moon is at 4:54 P.M., eight hours and
seventeen minutes earlier than the nigud emtzo'i and
thirteen hours and fifty- five minutes earlier than the full
fifteen days from the molad. One should not make a
berochoh even bedi'eved after the nigud
emtzo'i.
