Barak Equivocates: Tells IDF to Prepare Draft Plans and Appoints Committee to "Improve" Tal Law

Prime Minister Ehud Barak instructed the IDF on Sunday to prepare groundwork within the next 60 days for drafting chareidi yeshiva students. Trying to straddle the fence and keep all options open, at the same time he appointed Minister Michael Melchior to head a panel that will recommend "improvements" to the controversial Tal bill.

Interest Rates Down Another 0.2%

Bank of Israel governor David Klein announced on Monday that he will reduce the interest rate by 0.2 percent leaving the rate for January 8.0 percent a year. In the past six months, Klein has lowered interest rates six times, by a total 1.3 percent. According to the central bank governor, price stability will allow Israel to integrate into the global economy.

Ashkelon Electric Power Station Shabbos Desecration Averted

200 employees of the Ashkelon Rottenberg electric power station received notice to report for work on leil Shabbos parshas Vayishlach to take care of some repairs. However, because of the intervention of MK Rabbi Meir Porush, the Israel Electric Company retracted the notices at the last minute and notified the employees that the planned work had been canceled.

Thousands of Bnei Brak residents led by maranan verabonon the gedolei hador, roshei yeshiva, rabbonim, dayanim, avreichim, students and graduates of Yeshivas Mishkan Shimon accompanied HaRav Shmaryahu Barzilai, zt"l, rosh yeshiva of Mishkan Shimon, on his last earthly journey. HaRav Barzilai was niftar following a long illness at the age of 65.

Friends, family, and the entire South African chareidi community were deeply saddened at the news of the sudden petirah of Mrs. Zipporah Lieberman, wife of yibodel lechaim tovim Reb Tzvi Lieberman. Mrs. Lieberman was niftar in Yerushalayim on leil Shabbos Parshas Vayeitzei. Their home had been a prominent landmark of the Johannesburg chareidi community for over thirty-seven years.

Head Teacher of London School to Retire

The esteemed Head Teacher of the Menorah Primary School in London, Mrs. Sula Kestenbaum, has announced her intention to retire at the end of this academic year, after a long and distinguished career in education, culminating in a period of service at the Menorah school in excess of eleven years.
