Partners in Crime
by Rifca Goldberg
All was still and quiet. My accomplice and I surveyed
the airy, spacious home. We saw no one, heard no one. We
stealthily crept down the long corridor. The master bedroom's
door was slightly ajar, so we cautiously peeked in. There
against the far wall was an enormous oak wardrobe, the door
of which was open.
We entered oh, so quietly. My eyes went shelf by shelf
in search of... there! On the top shelf. An elaborate, hand
crafted jewelry box. My partner and I smiled at each other
expenctantly, silently, our eyes sparkling. We systematically
began removing the contents of each shelf, on the alert for
any valuables. Our excitement mounted as we got closer to our
main goal and then it was there, right in front of us!
My partner began working to open the exquisite jewelry
box. I, in my impatience, grabbed it, and with a tumble and a
bang, I fell, jewelry box and all.
For a long moment, we glanced at each other as well as
at the huge room, readying ourselves for any necessary
escape. But alas, it was too late. Two large hands hoisted us
up and before we knew it, we were both deposited behind bars.
Mommy popped pacifiers into our mouths and scolded us
as she went to clean up the mess we had made of her closet.
But not before she gave us a forgiving kiss.
My twin brother and I looked at each other through our
crib bars and grinned. Tired, we soon after contently drifted
off to sleep, thinking of tomorrow.. and more fun... and more
trouble...
Zzzzz, zzzzz, zzzzz...
