Zimbabwe Jewry Not Out Of Woods
Yet
by Yated Ne'eman South African Correspondent
Jewish leaders in South Africa have expressed relief at the
fact that the recent elections in neighboring Zimbabwe took
place fairly peacefully and that the immediate danger to the
country's small Jewish community has receded for the time
being. About half of Zimbabwe's 800 Jews, mostly the younger
members, left the country during the elections, which were
narrowly won by Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF Party.

OPINION &
COMMENT
Judaism is a Family-Based Way of
Life
Our feature article "DNA and the Chain Of Tradition" this
week reports on recent genetic research that shows that the
Jewish people are genetically coherent and pure. The
discoveries of molecular genetics and reading the code of the
human genome have shown that the Jewish people are closely
related to each other no matter where they lived for
thousands of years. This is a kiddush Hashem of the
highest order.

DNA and the Chain Of
Tradition
by R. Yaakov Kleiman
The field of genetics is experiencing a knowledge explosion.
The Human Genome Project of the United States Government is
analyzing and mapping the entire DNA of mankind. . . .
The first study discussed here . . . indicates, on the basis
of the genetic evidence, that Cohanim today all descended
from a single common ancestor who lived about 3,300 years ago
-- just about the time that Aharon Hacohen lived.
The second study indicates that all the Jewish communities .
. . originated in the Middle East and retained their genetic
identity for thousands of years . . . .
The last day for Kiddush Levonoh -- Tammuz
One can say Kiddush Levonoh in the entire world until
Sunday afternoon, 13 Tammuz (July 16), at 5:15 P.M.,
according to the Summer Clock, Israeli time. The actual final
time for the whole world is therefore the entire night of
Motzei Shabbos. However, in the eastern countries one
can make Kiddush Levonoh Sunday night according to the
difference in time zones in comparison to Eretz Yisroel.
The astronomical full moon comes together with a lunar
eclipse. The final time of Kiddush Levonoh is
therefore when the full eclipse starts which is 11:03
according to the Winter Clock in Melbourne, Australia. In
other eastern countries the final time is according to the
difference in time zones to the above time in Melbourne.
