OPINION & COMMENT

For the Sake of This G-d Took Me Out of Egypt!

Once again we prepare for Pesach. Do we think there is no point to read the Haggadah again and again?

Additional Calendar Information:

On Tuesday night, the eve of 14 Nisan (Mar. 30) is the search for chometz -- bedikas chometz. The chometz is burned the next morning on erev Pesach not later than the end of zman sereifas chometz.

On Wednesday, erev Pesach, 14 Nisan (March 31), is the fast of the firstborn -- Taanis Bechoros.

Pesach falls on Thursday (the seder is on Wednesday night) in Eretz Yisroel, and on Thursday and Friday in Chutz La'aretz. The days until Shevi'i Shel Pesach are chol hamoed.

Eruv Tavshilin must be made on Wednesday, Erev Pesach (Mar. 31) for those living in Chutz La'aretz.

From Musaf of Yom Tov we say morid hatol in Shemoneh Esrei instead of vesein tal umottor livrocho.

From Thursday night, motzei Yom Tov Rishon Shel Pesach we count sefiras ha'omer until Shavuos.

The seforim hakedoshim write to make a meal on the sixteenth of Nisan to remember the seudas Esther that she made when Haman was hung (Mishnah Berurah, 490:2 from the Mogen Avrohom).

Shiurim of a Kezayis Matzo

Hand Matzo

If the shiur of a kezayis is the volume of 50 cubic centimeters its weight is 22.5-27.5 gram (.7875-.9625 ounces).

If the shiur of a kezayis is the volume of 45 cubic centimeters (a half of a double-sized beitzah without its shell) its weight is approximately 20.3-24.8 gram (.7105-.868 ounces).

If the shiur of a kezayis is the volume of 33.33 cubic centimeters (a third of a double-sized beitzah without its shell) its weight is approximately 15.0-18.3 gram (.525-.6405 ounces).

Machine Matzo

Concerning the shiur of a kezayis machine matzo, the Chazon Ish ruled (as cited by HaRav Yaakov Yisroel Kanievsky zt'l) as it being a half to two thirds of a matzo.

For actual practice one should ask a moreh horo'oh.

See Berur Halocho Orach Chaim Kamma VeTeliso'oh 475.

Shevi'i Shel Pesach falls on Wednesday, 21 Nisan (April 7) and in Chutz La'aretz Thursday is Yom Tov Sheini Shel Goluyos -- Shemini Shel Pesach.

The earliest time of Kiddush Levonoh -- Iyar

The time of Kiddush Levonoh everywhere in the world begins when it is Sunday, the eve of 3 Iyar (April 18), 12.44 P.M. (according to the Summer Clock -- Daylight Savings Time), in Eretz Yisroel. In Eretz Yisroel itself, Europe, and eastern countries it is impossible to make a brocho on Kiddush Levonoh at all that night because the moon sets before the earliest time. In eastern America Kiddush Levonoh can be made on this night starting from 7:44 P.M. In the rest of America it is possible to make Kiddush Levonoh from the beginning of the night.

The astronomical new moon follows the molad this month by six hours and thirty nine minutes, and is at 7:22 A.M. However, during the three days after the molad the moon passes its lowest point (perigee) and advances extremely quickly. This altogether cancels its appearing after the molad, and on the contrary, the moon has advanced more than if it would have even appeared at the time of the molad. This information is significant for those who act according to the Chazon Ish and do not make a brocho on the moon until it is big and high in the sky. (Dinim VeHanhogos Orach Chaim pg. 86)
