Six Jews Wounded in Shabbos Hate Crime in Chicago; Gunman Commits Suicide

Six Jews on their way home from Friday night services were shot and wounded by a gunman who went on a two state shooting rampage against Jews, blacks and Asian-Americans. The man police said carried out the shootings was Benjamin Nathaniel Smith, a 21-year-old member of a white supremacist group. The bloodthirsty spree ended late Sunday night with the alleged gunman's suicide.

This past Thursday, the 17th of Tammuz, Torah Jewry mourned the petirah of the gaon, HaRav Shmuel Yaakov Weinberg, the rosh yeshiva of Ner Yisroel of Baltimore, and one of the greatest roshei yeshiva in the United States.

Barak Presents His Government

Prime Minister Ehud Barak presented his government for the Knesset's approval. Barak also suffered his first real setback since the elections, when his candidate for Knesset Speaker, Shalom Simhon, was easily defeated by the premier's long-time political rival, Avraham Burg, also of the One Israel party. Barak had not offered Burg any position in his government.

Only one thing concerned the negotiating team of UTJ: to guarantee that the yeshivos hakedoshos would not be undermined in any way whatsoever, for that was the mission they had been charged to fulfill by the gedolei ume'orei hador. After the intervention of the Supreme Court in the issue of the arrangements of military deferrals of yeshiva students, and after Barak himself proposed, in the previous Knesset, a law undermining the status of the bnei yeshiva, it seemed as if there was no natural way to arrest the decree.

Prayer Rallies for Iranian Jews Held on 17th of Tammuz

On the fast of the 17th of Tammuz, prayer services on behalf of the imprisoned Iranian Jews were held in a number of synagogues in Eretz Yisroel.

The main service took place in Jerusalem at 5 P.M. in the large Yeshuos Yaakov shul in Mea Shearim. At the service, the entire sefer Tehillim was read and the prayers of Habet miShomayim ure'ei and Ovinu Malkeinu were recited. The shofar was blown.

This past Monday night, the 22nd of Tammuz, a large throng, headed by maranan verabonon the gedolei haTorah, accompanied the great gaon, HaRav Avrohom Dovid Rosenthal zt"l on his last earthly journey. HaRav Rosenthal was the ravad of the beis din of HaRav Shmuel Salant and of the beis din of HaRav Tzvi Pesach Frank.

South African Rabbi Condemned

A Cape Town rabbi has been declared persona non grata by South Africa's Orthodox Jewish leadership.

The 1,600 members of the Green and Sea Point Hebrew Congregation were informed of the move in a letter that was signed by Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris, Beis Din head Rabbi Moshe Kurtzag and 10 other dayanim and Cape Town rabbis.

Survivors Urged to Apply for Swiss Funds
