The Crusades: Murder in the Name of Love and Mercy
by Rabbi Rafael Berelson
"In the year 4856, in the 11th year of the 256th cycle (of the New Moon). Woe is me."
In the order of the kinnos of Tisha B'Av, in addition to the Beis Hamikdosh, we also mourn for the destruction of the German communities at the beginning of the First Crusade. The Crusades took place in a blood-soaked period of the history of the Jewish people. Two kinnos written about the atrocities of the First Crusades were introduced into the order of the kinnos. This Crusade began 910 years ago, in the year 4856 (1096). Thus this calamity is known as "the gezeiroh of 4856" - "Tatnu" after the Hebrew letters of the date. The fortresses of Torah were destroyed in many communities, among them Speyer, Worms and Mainz. Thousands of Jews chose to die as martyrs rather than give in to the Christian warriors on their "holy" mission.
The jeep sputtered along the dirt path and came to a screeching halt. The motor continued running.

by HaRav Aharon Yehuda Leib Shteinman
The following is a hesped for HaRav Yitzchok Zilber zt"l whose second yahrtzeit is 8 Av.
It is very difficult to eulogize one who has passed away since it is impossible to evaluate his inner being and workings. But the little that we do know is very indicative and representative of the greatness of this deceased. |

Fences
Fiction by M. Sonnenfeld
Part II
Michael is a 12-year-old boy who has lived on a sheep farm his whole life and loves it. His father built up the farm from scratch, but now that he has found his Jewish roots he wants to sell the farm and move to a city to be part of a Jewish community. Michael is to go to a Torah school. Both parents are enthusiastically studying to learn more about Torah and mitzvos, but Michael is indifferent, if not hostile. He loves the wide open spaces and the closeness to nature and does not want to leave. His parents have hired a yeshiva bochur to come live with them and tutor Michael to help him make up what he has missed in Torah education. They are about to have their first lesson. |
