Swept up in the investigation of massive bribery and other allegations involving the large Holyland apartment project in the south of Jerusalem, former Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky was convicted of "taking" bribes and sentenced to six years in jail. The judge did note that Rabbi Lupoliansky did not personally receive any money, but he insisted that he benefited nonetheless since he is the founder of the Yad Sarah organization which received the donations.

Leo Melamed, chairman emeritus of the CME Group (formerly known as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange), went to Tokyo to honor a former Japanese consul in Lithuania, Chiune Sugihara, according to a report in New York Times Dealbook.
Religions Ministry will Supervise Excavations at the Golani Intersection
A big storm erupted this past Monday in the wake of Yated Ne'eman's exposure of the extensive excavation being done at the Golani Intersection up north. Witnesses reported mountains of earth mingled with human bones strewn indiscriminately about, close to and inside burial caves, without any supervision. Following the expose, MK Rabbi Gafni met with the Deputy Minister of Religions, Eli Ben Dehaan, and Director General of the Ministry, Elchanan Glatt, who promised to arrange supervision over the work being done in the area after publicizing a public tender, as is the procedure.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon summed up a heated exchange between Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and Justice Minister Tomy Lapid at last Sunday's Cabinet meeting.
Shalom had said, "It is disgusting already to hear you attacking Judaism every time we talk about Jewish issues. Don't make fun of what is important to us."

When this article was published in the Hebrew paper about two months ago (in the issue of Acharei Mos-Kedoshim) it elicited a very large the largest reader response, since it deals with one of the lingering sore issues in Klal Yisroel: cooperation with the non-religious when life and death issues are at stake. This is certainly not the last word, but these are important documents in what is an ongoing discussion.
