Lupoliansky Supporters Glad to See Him Home
By Yechiel Sever
Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky's many acquaintances and family members were pleased with the former Jerusalem mayor's release from police custody on Sunday following his arrest in connection with the Holyland case.
Many mainstream public figures, including veteran media figures, have noted Rabbi Lupoliansky's wide-ranging contributions to Israeli society through his work for Yad Sarah, saying that throughout his years of public service he has been dedicated to the public at large, not drawing distinctions between one sector and another.
Sunday afternoon Rabbi Lupoliansky was released from jail to ten days of house arrest. The court ordered him not to contact offices at city hall or Yad Sarah, which he founded, for a period of one month. Police investigators claim the chessed organization, which provides medical devices for those in need, received donations from entrepreneurs behind the Holyland project. According to reports his legal counsel, Atty. Yair Golan, said the contributions came from individuals who have been making donations to the organization for 20 years and that Rabbi Lupoliansky did not put any of that money into his own pockets.
Dozens of people spontaneously gathered at Rabbi Lupoliansky's home in Jerusalem to await his arrival and to show their support, following efforts by the police and the courts to humiliate him while under arrest.
