American RCA "Converts" Loyal Christian
Rabbis from the US-based Rabbinical Council of America have
"converted" to Judaism a woman who openly declared her
loyalty to Christian beliefs.
"All yirei Shomayim who are uncertain whether their
tefillin [are constructed] in accordance with halacha,
should have them checked to ensure [that the four head
compartments] are separate and distinct," wrote Maran HaRav
Eliashiv shlita in a note appended to a letter by
HaRav Dovid Morgenstern in response to an inquiry by a US Jew
who repairs and refurbishes tefillin.
Yisrael Beiteinu Chairman MK Avigdor Lieberman met with MKs
from UTJ, Shas and HaIchud HaLeumi to hammer out
controversial issues among the three parties, which are
slated to enter the next coalition. The meetings were held
with MKs Rabbi Moshe Gafni, Rabbi Yaakov Litzman, Yaakov
Margi and Yaakov Katz.
Chareidi and traditional residents of Netanya protested
strongly a municipality plan to approve land allocations for
a Reform synagogue despite the acute shortage of facilities
for botei knesses in the city. As a result, the city
backed down on its plans to approve the Reform request.
Nazareth Illit officials are formulating a new plan to settle
some 10,000 chareidim in the city. The municipality is hoping
to allocate land in the city's Har Yonah Gimmel area for the
construction of thousands of housing units for the chareidi
sector.
Maranan verabonon, roshei yeshivos, rabbonim
and dayonim were on hand to mark the end of the Shmittah year
at a gala event held at Lev Atzula halls in Petach Tikva on
Monday. The event was sponsored by the Institute for Research
on Torah-Based Agriculture and Kashrus Lemehadrin's Vaad
HaShmittah, which are under the close guidance of Maran HaRav

Rav Zechariah Berkovitz, chazan in Lausanne,
Switzerland received semichoh from the rabbonim of
Hungary. Though he held the position of chazan he was
in fact the head of the community, which he saved from the
influence of the Reform movement that was thriving at the
time. He was known for his sharpness, which at different
times has been directed at antisemites, Reformers and even at
lapsed Jews. Here are some of his incisive remarks.
