Iranian Jews Keep a Low Profile During Unrest
Iranian Jews have been keeping a low profile as demonstrators flood the streets in major cities to demand new elections following charges of officially sanctioned election fraud. Citing security concerns, Teheran's Jewish community decided to cancel social events and educational programs, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported.
Members of the Beit Shemesh branch of Degel HaTorah convened a special meeting to survey the work of the faction's representatives on the city council and to discuss various matters on the local agenda, including new construction in Ramat Beit Shemesh Gimmel. The highlight of the meeting was the announcement of a special housing development there tentatively entitled Kiryat Degel HaTorah, which is taking shape with Housing Ministry assistance.
A Yemenite appeals court handed down a death sentence this week to Abdul-Aziz al-Abdi for the murder last December of Moshe Yaish Nahari Hy"d, one of the heads of the local kehilloh in the town of Raida, located 70 kilometers (40 miles) north of the capital city of Sanaa. The defense attorney said he would file an appeal with the Supreme Court.
Seventeen introductory shiurim, organized by Agudath Israel of America's Daf Yomi Commission, were delivered across the United States and Canada to prepare the lomdei hadaf for Eizehu Neshech, the fifth perek of Bava Metzia, whose study begins on Wednesday 2 Tammuz/June 24th.
MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni tabled a bill that would require local authorities to provide funding and educational services to Chinuch Atzmai and Maayan Hachinuch HaTorani schools at levels equivalent to those granted to government and government-religious schools, including funding to cover electricity, water, janitorial, cleaning and other basic services. The bill was signed by Rabbi Gafni, Rabbi Uri Maklev and Rabbi Menachem Eliezer Moses, all of UTJ.
Following a series of negotiations between Spanish government authorities and representatives from the Committee for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries in Europe (CPJCE), the Conference of European Rabbis (CER), the Jewish Federation of Spain and the Jewish communities of Madrid a moving funeral was held this week before the reinterment of 105 of the Toledo kedoshim.
