Ma'aser Oni Seminars in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak

By Betzalel Kahn

Beis Hamedrash Lehalochoh Behisyashvus sponsored an evening seminar in Bnei Brak on Monday 24 Tishrei and in Jerusalem on Tuesday, focusing on Ma'aser Oni which applies this year. The seminar addressed ways to fulfill the mitzvah and to avoid stealing from the poor, both in the case of tevel vadai grown in backyards, and the halachic arrangement used in wholesale markets and stores. The speakers also discussed the halochos of tzedokoh and the definition of a poor person eligible to receive tzedokoh and ma'aser oni.

HaRav Yissochor Meir and HaRav Ben Tzion Pellman delivered the shiurim at Beis Knesses Nachalas Moshe in Bnei Brak while HaRav Michel Zilber, HaRav Yitzchok Zilberstein, HaRav Yosef Efrati, who heads the Beis Medrash, and HaRav Shaul Reichenberg, gave the shiurim at the Beis Medrash's newly-completed building on Rechov Hamelamed at the entrance to Jerusalem's Har Nof neighborhood.

The issue of Ma'aser Oni gained public attention in recent years after Maran HaRav Eliashiv shlita issued instructions to inform the public of the importance of giving Ma'aser Oni properly to avoid stealing from the poor. Although the current arrangement does not fulfill the mitzvah behiddur, since nonetheless it precludes the theft of matanos ani'im, Maran said it is preferable to buy produce at stores that adhere to it.

Beis Hamedrash Lehalochoh Behisyashvus works hard to facilitate the fulfillment of the mitzvah of Ma'aser Oni, both for tevel vadai and at packaging plants and markets, and by raising public awareness and encouraging the study of the relevant halochos.
