Histadrut Allows Religious Council Workers to Strike

by G. Kleiman

"Religious council workers around the country are hereby authorized to strike to protest the prolonged withholding of their pay," the Histadrut announced.

According to the Histadrut board some 5,000 religious council (moatza datit) workers can begin organizing, but steps towards a strike are subject to the approval of the rabbonim they work under, some of whom are unwilling to take such drastic measures. If the workers do take measures, disruptions are expected in services including marriage registration and burial.

Some 1,000 religious council workers have had their pay withheld for periods ranging from one month to a year-and-a- half.

Histadrut Hamaof (Workers Councils) Chairman Leon Morozovsky recently contacted State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss to demand an investigation of the failure to pay salaries. He says the religious councils owe tens of millions of shekels in back pay.
